250 Words Every Intermediate Scrabble Player Should Know
You know the basics. You're comfortable with two-letter words, you can play power tiles without panicking, and you occasionally land a bingo. Now it's time to cross the threshold into competitive play. The 250 words in this guide represent the vocabulary gap between a casual 250-point player and a club-level 350-point player. This isn't about memorizing random obscure words โ it's about systematic study of word categories that unlock specific scoring techniques: bingo stems, dump words, hooks, and the complete Q-without-U arsenal.

The Top Bingo Stems and Their Extensions
A bingo stem is a 6-letter combination that produces valid 7-letter words with many different 7th letters. The more letters a stem "takes," the more likely you are to complete a bingo when you hold that stem. At intermediate level, you should know the top 10 stems cold and be able to spot them on your rack within seconds.
SATIRE
Takes 23 of 26 letters ยท 100+ valid bingos ยท The gold standard
SATIRE + B = BAITERS, REBAITS. SATIRE + C = RACIEST, STEARIC. SATIRE + D = TIRADES, STAIDER. SATIRE + G = STAGIER, GAITERS. When you see S, A, T, I, R, E on your rack (in any order), you almost certainly have a bingo.
| Stem | Letters Taken | Example Bingos |
|---|---|---|
| SATIRE | 23/26 | NASTIER, RETAINS, ANTSIER |
| RETINA | 21/26 | TRAINED, DETRAIN,ERTAIN |
| SENIOR | 19/26 | EROSION, IRONERS, NOSIEER |
| ORNATE | 18/26 | SENATOR, TREASON, ATONERS |
| INSURE | 17/26 | UNITERS, NUTSIER, INSURER |
| LINERS | 16/26 | INLIERS, RESILIN, SLINKER |
| TONSIL | 15/26 | LOTIONS, STOLLEN, NOSTALG |
| TONIER | 18/26 | ROUTINE, SNOTTIER, TONIERS |
| GREATS | 14/26 | STORAGE, GAITERS, STAGIER |
| DATERS | 16/26 | STAIDER, TIRADES, INSTEAD |
๐ก How to Use Stems
When you draw 5-6 tiles from a known stem, shift your strategy to bingo-hunting. Sacrifice 5-10 points per turn to keep stem tiles and draw into the missing letters. A single bingo (+50 bonus) more than compensates for 2-3 turns of slightly lower scores.
Complete Q-Without-U Words
At intermediate level, you should know ALL playable Q-without-U words โ not just QI. This complete list removes the Q from your "fear" category entirely. When you draw Q without U, you have options. When you draw Q with U, great โ but you don't need it.
QI (11 pts): Life force. The essential 2-letter Q play. Plural: QIS (12).
QOPH (18 pts): Hebrew letter. Strong 4-letter option โ QOPHS is the plural (19).
QADI (14 pts): Islamic judge. Common in tournament play.
QAID (14 pts): Muslim chief. Same tiles as QADI rearranged.
QANAT (14 pts): Irrigation tunnel. 5 letters, no U needed.
QINTAR (15 pts): Albanian currency unit. 6-letter Q-no-U word.
QINDAR (15 pts): Variant of qintar. Another 6-letter option.
QWERTY (21 pts): Keyboard layout. The highest-scoring common Q-no-U word.
TRANQ (14 pts): Short for tranquilizer. Easy to remember and play.
TALAQ (14 pts): Islamic divorce. Strong 5-letter play option.
Consonant Dumps โ Clearing Heavy Racks
When your rack is loaded with consonants and no vowels, you need words that use multiple consonants efficiently. These "consonant dumps" save you from wasting a turn on an exchange while still scoring points and improving your leave.
๐ง Consonant-Heavy Words
These words use 3+ consonants with minimal vowels. Perfect for when you draw BCDFG and need to clear tiles without exchanging. The best dumps are also high-scoring โ you fix your rack AND earn points.
| Word | Pts | Consonants Used | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| TSKS | 8 | T, S, K, S | Disapproving sounds โ all consonants |
| NTH | 6 | N, T, H | To the nth degree โ 3 consonants |
| PSYCH | 15 | P, S, C, H | To intimidate โ only Y as vowel |
| GLYPH | 14 | G, L, P, H | Carved symbol โ Y as vowel |
| LYMPH | 15 | L, M, P, H | Body fluid โ Y as vowel |
| CRYPT | 12 | C, R, P, T | Underground vault |
| DRYTH | 12 | D, R, T, H | Archaic for drought |
| PHPHT | 13 | P, H, P, H, T | Exclamation โ zero vowels! |
| TRYST | 8 | T, R, S, T | Secret meeting |
| SYNTH | 11 | S, N, T, H | Electronic instrument |
Vowel Dumps โ Clearing Excess Vowels
The opposite problem: too many vowels and not enough consonants. These words consume 3-5 vowels in one play, restoring balance to your rack. The best vowel dumps score reasonably while using tiles that would otherwise rot on your rack for multiple turns.
๐ฏ AQUAE โ 14 pts
Plural of aqua. Uses Q + 3 vowels. Excellent when holding Q + U + A.
๐ฏ ADIEU โ 6 pts
Farewell. Uses 4 vowels in 5 letters โ the classic vowel dump.
๐ฏ OURIE โ 5 pts
Feeling cold (Scottish). O + U + I + E = 4 vowels cleared.
๐ฏ LOOIE โ 5 pts
Lieutenant (informal). Double O + I + E = heavy vowel clear.
๐ฏ AERIE โ 5 pts
Eagle's nest. A + E + I + E = 4 vowels in 5 letters.
๐ฏ EERIE โ 5 pts
Strange and unsettling. Three E's + I = massive E dump.
High-Value Short Words for Premium Squares
At intermediate level, you should target premium squares aggressively. Short words (3-4 letters) with high face value are ideal for DLS/TLS/DWS/TWS squares because you can place the high-value letter precisely on the bonus. These words score 20-50+ points when placed optimally.
| Word | Base | On TLS | On DWS |
|---|---|---|---|
| ZAX | 19 | 39 (Z on TLS) | 38 |
| JINX | 18 | 34 (J on TLS) | 36 |
| QUIZ | 22 | 42 (Q on TLS) | 44 |
| QUAY | 16 | 36 (Q on TLS) | 32 |
| FEZ | 15 | 35 (Z on TLS) | 30 |
| JAXY | 21 | 37 (J on TLS) | 42 |
| CZAR | 15 | 35 (Z on TLS) | 30 |
| JEUX | 18 | 34 (J on TLS) | 36 |
