90-Day Tournament Preparation Plan
You've decided to enter your first tournament. Whether it's 8 weeks or 14 weeks away, this 12-week program gives you the most efficient path from "casual player" to "tournament ready." It covers vocabulary, strategy, endgame technique, and — crucially — the mental preparation that most study guides ignore.
Program Overview

Phase 1: Vocabulary Foundation (Weeks 1-4)
Build the word knowledge base tournament play demands:
🧩 Weekly Breakdown
Week 1: All 127 two-letter words + top 100 three-letter words. Daily flash card sessions. Quiz yourself before bed.
Week 2: Q-without-U words (30+), J/X/Z power words, and vowel dumps (AALII, AIOLI, OURIE). Handle every awkward rack.
Week 3: Top 50 bingo stems (SATIRE, RETAIN, NASTIER...) + anagramming practice. Spend 15 min/day with random racks finding 7-letter words.
Week 4: Hooks (front and back). Learn which common words can be extended. Practice spotting hook opportunities on a board.
Phase 2: Strategic Development (Weeks 5-8)
Vocabulary gets you playing — strategy gets you winning:
Week 5-6: Rack Management
Learn leave values. Practice keeping balanced racks (3-4 consonants, 2-3 vowels). Study when to exchange vs play. Rate every leave after you play.
Week 5-6: Board Control
Open boards when behind, close when ahead. Identify triple word threats. Practice parallel plays for scoring without opening lanes.
Week 7-8: Defensive Play
Threat scanning after every move. Blocking technique. Finding plays that score well AND deny opponent's big play.
Week 7-8: Endgame Basics
Tile tracking from mid-game. Going-out calculations. Simple endgame scenarios (2-4 tiles each). Speed drills under time pressure.

Phase 3: Tournament Simulation (Weeks 9-12)
The final month is about integrating skills under realistic conditions:
Weekly tournament days: Every Saturday, play 4-6 timed games back-to-back. Simulate real tournament conditions — clock, scoring, no takebacks.
Mental stamina drills: Build endurance for 6-8 hour days of play. Practice staying focused in game 6 when you're tired. Develop between-game recovery routines.
Pressure inoculation: Play against stronger opponents. Practice the uncomfortable feeling of being behind and fighting back. Learn to reset after a loss.
Logistics rehearsal: Pack your tournament bag. Time your commute. Practice your pre-game routine. Eliminate all day-of surprises.
Mental Preparation
Tournament performance is 60% preparation and 40% mental game. Build psychological resilience:
💡 Mental Framework
Set process goals: "I will track tiles every game," "I will consider 3 plays before choosing." Outcome goals ("win 4 games") create pressure. Process goals build confidence through consistency.
✓ Healthy Mindset
"Every game teaches me something." "I control my effort, not the tiles." "Losses to stronger players are learning fees." "I'm here to grow."
✗ Unhealthy Mindset
"I must win X games or I've failed." "The tiles are against me." "Everyone here is better." "I should have studied more."
Final Week Checklist
The week before your tournament — taper your study and focus on readiness:
⚠️ Days 85-90
Light review only — no cramming. Play 1-2 casual games to stay sharp. Pack your bag. Confirm logistics (venue, start time, parking). Get extra sleep. Trust your preparation.
