Basic tile tracking tells you what's been played. Advanced tile counting tells you what your opponent holds, what you'll likely draw next, and exactly which tiles remain when the bag empties. This is the skill that separates tournament players from club players — the ability to make perfect-information decisions in what appears to be an imperfect-information game.

Level 1: Distribution Awareness

Before you can track what's played, you need to know what started in the bag. The tile distribution is your baseline:

Key insight: once all 12 E's are on the board, no more E's exist. Once both blanks are played, bingo probability drops significantly for everyone. Track high-impact tiles first: blanks, S tiles, and power tiles.

💡 The Power Tile Countdown

There are exactly 10 high-impact tiles to track from move 1: 2 blanks, 4 S tiles, 1 Z, 1 X, 1 J, 1 Q. Once all 10 are accounted for (played or in your rack), you know neither player can surprise the other with these game-changers. This single piece of knowledge changes your risk calculus completely.

Level 2: Inferring Opponent Racks

You can't see opponent's tiles, but their behaviour reveals them. Every play choice leaks information:

They played short and low-scoring: Likely building toward a bingo. Their leave contains stem tiles (SATIRE pieces). Expect a 7-letter word in 1-2 turns. Block bingo lanes.

They dumped multiple vowels: Their rack was vowel-heavy. After drawing replacements, they may still be vowel-heavy (or now balanced). Less likely to hold power consonants.

They avoided an obvious TWS play: They don't have the tiles to reach it. If the TWS needs a 6-letter word through specific anchor letters, they lack those letters.

They exchanged tiles: Their rack was terrible (likely QVWU-type). After exchange, assume a fresh random draw. No inference about specific tiles, but they're now playing from average.

💡 The Negative Inference

The most powerful deduction is negative: what they DIDN'T do tells you what they DON'T have. If an expert didn't play through an open TWS lane, they can't — not they won't. This narrows their possible rack dramatically.

Level 3: Probability Estimation

Knowing how many of each tile remain in the unseen pool (bag + opponent's rack) lets you calculate drawing probabilities:

Example: 60 tiles played, 7 in your rack = 33 unseen. If 3 S tiles are on the board and you hold 0, there's 1 S in 33 unseen tiles = 3% chance of drawing S per tile. If you play 5 tiles, your chance of drawing an S in the next 5 is roughly 15%.

Level 4: Endgame Perfect Deduction

When the bag empties, everything becomes knowable. You see the board (played tiles), you see your rack. Subtraction gives you the opponent's exact rack. This is the endgame advantage of good tracking:

Know exactly which words opponent can play. Block their highest-scoring options. Calculate if you go out first. Plan final 2-3 turns optimally. Never be surprised.

⚠️ Common Mistake

Many players stop tracking mid-game and can't deduce endgame tiles. Start tracking by turn 8-10 at minimum. By turn 12, you need exact counts to play the endgame correctly.

Practical Tracking Methods

You can't memorise 100 tiles in real-time. Use these practical systems:

Track by category: Don't track all 27 types. Focus on: power tiles (Z,X,J,Q), blanks (2), S tiles (4), and total vowel/consonant balance. These 10 things cover 80% of useful decisions.

Tally sheet method: Keep a paper tally of the initial distribution. Cross off tiles as they appear on the board. By mid-game you'll see gaps — unseen tiles that must be in the bag or opponent's rack.

Mental checkpoints: At turns 5, 10, and 15, do a quick audit: "How many S tiles played? Both blanks gone? Q accounted for?" These checkpoints keep your model updated without constant effort.

Using Counting to Make Better Decisions

Knowledge without action is useless. Here's how tracking data improves specific decisions:

If both blanks are played: bingo probability drops 60% for both players — play for points, not stems. If 3 of 4 S tiles are gone: your S is worth holding (scarcity value up). If Q is unseen with 10 tiles left: someone holds it — if not you, expect opponent to struggle.
