Valid vs Invalid — The Proper Noun Rule

The golden rule for animal words in Scrabble: if the word appears as a common noun (lowercase) in the official dictionary, it's valid. Generic species names and established English words for animals all count.

✓ Valid Animal Words

Common nouns: EMU, OX, GNU, YAK, IBEX, HAWK, LYNX, WREN, KUDU, ZEBU, OKAPI, ORYX — all lowercase dictionary entries

✗ Invalid Animal Words

Proper nouns: Labrador, Siamese, Angus, Doberman, Persian — breed names are capitalized and not allowed in Scrabble

💡 Key Rule

If you'd capitalize it in a sentence, it's probably not valid in Scrabble. "I saw a hawk" (valid) vs "I have a Labrador" (invalid). Generic animal categories (bird, fish, cat, dog) are always valid too.

High-Value Animals by Tile

Animals with premium tiles (J, K, X, Z) are your best scoring opportunities. Here's a breakdown by the high-value letter they contain.

🔤 Z Animals

ZEBU (15), ZEBRA (16) — Z=10 makes these instant high-scorers

🔤 X Animals

OX (9), IBEX (13), ORYX (14), LYNX (14), FOX (13) — X=8 in short words

🔤 J Animals

JAY (13), JACKDAW (24), JACKAL (19) — J=8 in recognizable names

🔤 K Animals

YAK (10), HAWK (14), KUDU (9), OKAPI (11) — K=5 boosts exotic animals

Strategy Tips

Short exotic animals are gold: OX (9 pts, 2 letters), YAK (10 pts, 3 letters), and IBEX (13 pts, 4 letters) deliver exceptional points-per-tile ratios and fit tight board spaces.

ZEBU is your best Z-animal play: At 15 points for just 4 letters, ZEBU uses common tiles (E, B, U) alongside Z. Much easier to draw than ZEBRA, and nearly as high-scoring.

Animal plurals extend your reach: EMUS, GNUS, YAKS, EWES — adding S to short animal words is almost always valid and lets you hook onto existing plays for bonus points.

Know your hooks: OX hooks to FOX, BOX, POX. EWE hooks to EWER. EMU becomes EMUS. Animal words with common patterns create multiple play opportunities.

Premium square targeting: LYNX or ORYX (14 pts) landing X on a TLS gives you 30+ additional points from that one tile alone. Plan animal plays around premium square access.
