Why are proper nouns not allowed in Scrabble?

Scrabble dictionaries only contain common words — nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs that aren't capitalised. Proper nouns (names of people, places, brands) are excluded because they're arbitrary labels rather than words with general meanings that all English speakers share.

Category 1: Proper Nouns

The biggest source of illegal plays. Any word that requires a capital letter is banned — names of people, places, brands, days, months, languages, and nationalities.

✗ People & Places

LONDON, PARIS, JAMES, GOOGLE, TESLA, NIKE, AMAZON — all illegal regardless of how common they are.

✗ Days & Months

MONDAY, FRIDAY, JANUARY, MARCH — these are always capitalised in English, so they're excluded.

✓ Tricky Exceptions

CHINA (porcelain), SCOTCH (tape/whisky), CHAMPAGNE (sparkling wine) — lowercase meanings make these valid!

✓ Valid Despite Looking Wrong

FRENCH (verb: to trim), WELSH (verb: to renege), POLISH (verb: to shine) — valid because they have lowercase meanings.

Category 2: Abbreviations & Acronyms

If a word is just initials or a shortened form, it's illegal. This catches out many players who forget that common terms they use daily are actually abbreviations.

💡 Exception: Words That Used to Be Abbreviations

Some abbreviations have become words in their own right: SCUBA, RADAR, LASER, AWOL — these ARE valid in SOWPODS because dictionaries now list them as standalone words with lowercase entries.

Category 3: Slang & Informal Words

Some slang words make it into the dictionary (and therefore into Scrabble), but many don't. The test is simple: is it in the official Scrabble dictionary (SOWPODS or TWL)?

Surprisingly valid slang: SELFIE, EMOJI, TWERK, BEZZY, and LOLZ are all in SOWPODS. New words get added with each dictionary update.

Common slang that's illegal: LOL, BRB, YOLO, FOMO — these are initialisms, not words. They haven't been accepted into dictionaries as standalone entries yet.

Category 4: Hyphenated & Multi-Word Terms

Words with hyphens or spaces don't count. Even if the component parts are valid individually, the hyphenated form is not playable as a single word.

Category 5: Foreign Words (Not Adopted)

Would it need a capital letter in a sentence? If yes, it's probably illegal.

Is it an abbreviation you'd write in all-caps? (DNA, TV, OK) — illegal.

Does it have a hyphen or space? Only single unhyphenated words are valid.
