Common Words to Learn by Length
The SOWPODS dictionary contains over 280,000 valid words — but you don't need all of them. A strategic subset of words, learned in the right order, delivers 80% of the game value in 5% of the total vocabulary. This guide organizes that subset by word length, giving you a clear roadmap from day one to tournament-ready.

Two-Letter Words: The Foundation (107 Words)
Every competitive player knows all 107 two-letter words. They're used for parallel plays (placing a word alongside another to score on multiple intersections), filling tight spaces, and dumping difficult tiles. Learn these in your first two weeks.
✓ High-Value 2s to Prioritize
QI (11pts), ZA (11pts), ZO (11pts), JO (9pts), XI (9pts), XU (9pts), AX (9pts), EX (9pts), OX (9pts). These turn dead tiles into 20-30 point plays.
✓ Surprising Valid 2s
CH, GU, KA, OB, PO, QI, ZO — words that catch opponents off guard. Most players won't challenge these if you play with confidence.
Three-Letter Words: The Hooks (Top 300)
Three-letter words serve two purposes: they score well with power tiles, and they act as hooks for extending existing words. Learn the power-tile words first, then the most productive hooks.
🧩 Learning Order for 3-Letter Words
Q/Z/X/J words: QAT, QIS, ZAX, ZEP, ZAP, XIS, JEU, JAB, JOT (~40 words)

Remaining common words: fills out your vocab for flexible short plays (~80 words)
Four and Five-Letter Words: The Scoring Engine
4-5 letter words are your bread-and-butter scoring plays. They hit premium squares easily, use difficult tiles efficiently, and set up future plays. Focus on words with high-value tiles placed on bonus squares.
Seven and Eight-Letter Words: Bingo Territory
You don't memorize individual 7-8 letter words — you learn stems. A stem is a 6-letter combination that produces many valid bingos when paired with a 7th letter. Learning 50 stems gives you access to thousands of bingos.
The Golden Stems
SATIRE · RETINA · SENIOR · ORNATE · RETAIN
SATIRE alone produces 100+ valid 7-letter words depending on the 7th letter drawn. If your rack contains S+A+T+I+R+E plus any common letter, you almost certainly have a bingo available.
The Complete Learning Roadmap
Here's your month-by-month plan from zero to tournament-ready vocabulary. Each phase builds on the previous — don't skip ahead until you've mastered the current level.
Month 1: Foundation (~400 words). All 2-letter words (107) + top 3-letter power words (300). You can now play any space on the board and score with power tiles.
Month 2-3: Expansion (~600 words). Power 4-5 letter words (200) + remaining common 3s (200) + Q-without-U words (40). Your per-turn scoring rises significantly.
Month 4-6: Bingo Ready (~1,000+ words). Top 50 bingo stems + their anagrams. Front/back hooks for words you already know. Your bingo rate will jump from near-zero to 1+ per game.
Month 7+: Mastery (ongoing). Obscure but valid words, defensive vocabulary, all remaining stems. At this point you're refining edges, not building foundations.
