If you play RE for 8, opponent plays QANAT for 14, then you play T somewhere for 2 and they're stuck — but they might find QI for 11 instead. Your play determines what your opponent can do, which determines what you do next, and so on until someone goes out. Stuck Situations — When Neither Player Can Go Out

If you're ahead and predict a stuck situation developing, engineer it deliberately — play to remove your own high-value tiles while blocking spots your opponent's tiles could use. Using the 6-pass rule strategically: If you're ahead and opponent can't play, DON'T pass immediately. Play one tile per turn (even for 1-2 points each) to add to your score before the 6-pass limit triggers. Each play you make is pure profit. Only pass when you genuinely cannot play — the 6-pass clock doesn't start until both players pass consecutively.

The exchange option in endgame: Remember — you cannot exchange tiles when the bag has fewer than 7 tiles. Once the bag is nearly empty, you're committed to playing or passing. The Slow Grind: You're ahead by 60 and opponent has 2 tiles (worth 11 points total). Don't go out yet. Play one tile per turn for maximum individual scores. They're stuck passing (no plays). Each turn you play adds pure profit: play score minus zero (they can't respond). Grind for 3-4 turns, adding 15-25 to your spread before finally ending it.

The Defensive Out: You're behind by 5 points with 2 tiles left. Your out-play scores 8 (puts you ahead by 3 before bonus). Opponent has low tiles (4 points). Total swing: 8 + 8 bonus = you win by 11. But if you play a 15-point word that doesn't go out, opponent responds with 12 and you're behind by 2. The lower-scoring out-play wins the game; the higher-scoring alternative loses it.

The Dump-and-Run: You hold 6 tiles including V and W (awkward, hard to play). Opponent holds 3 tiles. Rather than struggling to play VW combinations, dump the V for 4 points into a dead zone, then next turn play the remaining 5 tiles in a way that goes out. The 4-point dump costs almost nothing but enables a clean out-play that would have been impossible with V blocking your rack.
