The endgame is where Scrabble games are decided. A 40-point lead can evaporate in two turns if you miscalculate, and a 30-point deficit can be overcome with precise play. Unlike the rest of the game where luck and probability play significant roles, the endgame rewards pure calculation — you have perfect information and every decision is deterministic. When the Endgame Begins — Recognising the Transition
Technically, the endgame starts when the tile bag empties and the next player draws no new tiles. But strong players prepare for it 2-3 turns earlier. When the bag has fewer than 7 tiles, you're in the pre-endgame — a critical phase where your decisions determine whether you'll enter the endgame with an advantage or a problem.
The pre-endgame requires a shift in thinking. Rack leave, which dominated your midgame decisions, becomes less important because you won't draw replacements much longer. Scoring efficiency and tile dumping (getting rid of difficult letters before the bag empties) take priority. If you're holding Q or V with 5 tiles in the bag, play them now even for minimal score — being stuck with them in the endgame is far more costly.
💡 Pre-Endgame Priority Shift
When 7+ tiles in bag: prioritise rack leave quality. When 3-6 tiles in bag: dump awkward letters and set up out-plays. When 0 tiles in bag: pure calculation — score maximally while controlling opponent's options.
A key pre-endgame skill is counting the bag. After each of your opponent's plays, mentally note how many tiles they drew. When they draw fewer than 7 (visible because they didn't replenish fully), the bag is nearly empty. At this point, you know every unseen tile: those on the board (visible), yours (known), and the remainder split between your opponent's rack and the bag.
Tile Tracking Methodology — Building Perfect Information
Tile tracking is the mechanical skill that makes endgame calculation possible. Without it, you're guessing. With it, you know exactly what your opponent holds and can calculate the optimal play sequence with certainty.

After each play (yours and opponent's), cross off the played letters. Keep a running tally of unseen tiles.
Subtract your own rack from the unseen pool. The remainder equals (bag tiles) + (opponent's rack).
When the bag empties, unseen minus your rack = opponent's exact hand. Now calculate their maximum score possibilities.
Common tracking mistakes: forgetting to count blanks (they're played face-up as whatever letter they represent, but you still need to track them as blanks used), missing tiles from exchanges (exchanged tiles go back to the bag — you can't know which ones), and miscounting duplicate letters (E has 12 tiles — easy to lose count).

Endgame Calculation — The Decision Framework
With perfect information, endgame decisions are mathematical. For each candidate play, you can calculate the exact sequence of moves to the game's conclusion. The process is: enumerate your options, simulate opponent's best response to each, and choose the sequence that produces the highest final spread.
Score + Bonus − Opponent's Best
Your play score + out-bonus (if you go out) − opponent's maximum response = net value
For each candidate play: calculate your score, add the out-play bonus if applicable (opponent's remaining tile values × 2), then subtract whatever your opponent's best reply scores. The play with the highest net value wins — not the highest immediate score.
Consider this scenario: you're ahead by 20, holding ERT, opponent holds QAIN (you know from tracking). Your options might be: play RE for 8 (leaving T), or play TREE for 12 (going out). If you play TREE, you go out and gain QAIN's value (11 × 2 = 22 swing, so net +34 with your 12). If you play RE for 8, opponent plays QANAT for 14, then you play T somewhere for 2 and they're stuck — but they might find QI for 11 instead. Calculate every branch.
When to go out fast: When opponent holds high-value tiles (Q, Z, X, J) or many tiles. The out-bonus is large, making speed more valuable than scoring.
When to score instead: When opponent holds low-value tiles (all 1-pointers like EEEINT). The out-bonus is tiny (7 × 2 = 14 swing) so a 25-point play that doesn't go out may be better than a 6-point out-play.
When to block: When opponent has a clear 40+ point play on the board and you can't outrun them. Sacrifice your own score to remove their big play, then grind out the remaining turns.
Common Endgame Patterns — Recognise and React
Certain endgame positions recur frequently. Recognising these patterns saves calculation time and prevents common errors that cost games at critical moments.

The Q-stick pattern is the most dramatic. When your opponent is stuck with Q and no I-adjacent open square exists on the board, they literally cannot play. Each turn they pass, and you play one tile at a time (slowly) to maximise your score while they accumulate 10-point penalties. Recognising this pattern early — and either creating or preventing it — is a critical endgame skill.
The Spread Maximisation Principle
In tournament Scrabble, spread (total point differential across all games) determines tiebreakers and rankings. This means the endgame isn't just about winning — it's about winning by as much as possible when you're ahead, and losing by as little as possible when you're behind.
✓ When ahead: maximise spread
Don't just go out quickly. If playing 2 more turns scores 50 extra and opponent's tiles are worth only 8, those 2 turns add 42 to your spread. Play them out.
✓ When behind: minimise damage
Even if you can't win, going out first limits your losses. Don't hold tiles hoping for a miracle — dump efficiently and minimise the opponent's out-bonus.
A subtle spread principle: when you're winning by 80+ in the endgame, don't rush to end the game. Play your tiles one at a time for maximum individual scores. Each tile played is pure profit added to your spread. Only rush if your opponent has plays that would close the gap.
Stuck Situations — When Neither Player Can Go Out
Sometimes the board locks completely and neither player can play. This happens when remaining tiles are consonant-heavy (BCFGV) and the board has no vowel-adjacent open spots, or when the only open lanes require specific letters neither player holds.

When both players pass consecutively three times each (6 total passes), the game ends. Each player subtracts the face value of their remaining tiles from their score. No bonus is awarded to either player — unlike a normal out-play.
Stuck situations require different calculation. You want to minimise your remaining tile values while maximising plays that force your opponent to keep high-value tiles. If you can play a 2-point tile (even for zero word score) to avoid having it count against you at game end, that's a net +4 compared to keeping it (you lose 2, they don't gain 2).
The player who gets stuck with fewer points' worth of tiles wins the stuck game. If you're ahead and predict a stuck situation developing, engineer it deliberately — play to remove your own high-value tiles while blocking spots your opponent's tiles could use. If you're behind in a stuck game, you need to find ways to play your tiles even for minimal score.
Practice Exercises — Building Endgame Muscles
Endgame skill develops through repetition. Like chess endgames, pattern recognition speeds up with practice until complex positions feel intuitive rather than requiring full calculation each time.
🎯 Exercise 1: Speed Out-Plays
Give yourself 3 random tiles and a nearly-full board. Find the fastest way to play all 3 tiles (1 play if possible, 2 at most). Practice finding out-plays under time pressure — 30 seconds per position.
🎯 Exercise 2: Block the Q
Set up a board where opponent has Q and 2 other tiles. Your job: find plays that block all QI spots while scoring. Time yourself — under 60 seconds for full analysis.
🎯 Exercise 3: Go Out or Score?
Set up positions where you can go out for 8 points or play a 35-point word that doesn't finish your tiles. Calculate which is better based on opponent's tiles. Practice the math until it's automatic.
🎯 Exercise 4: Full Endgame Solve
Set up a real endgame position (both racks known, 5 tiles each). Calculate the optimal play sequence for both sides. What's the final score difference with perfect play? Compare your answer to computer analysis.
