1. How many tiles does each player draw? Each player draws 7 tiles at the start and replenishes back to 7 after each turn (until the bag is empty). If fewer than 7 tiles remain in the bag, you draw whatever is left.

2. Can you use proper nouns in Scrabble? No. Proper nouns (names of people, places, brands, acronyms) are never allowed. All words must appear in the official dictionary as common words. This includes GOOGLE, PARIS, IPHONE — none are valid.

3. What happens if you challenge a word and it's valid? In North American rules, the challenger loses their turn. In international rules (SOWPODS), there's no penalty for an unsuccessful challenge. This difference significantly affects strategy — players in NASPA games challenge less often.

4. Can you exchange tiles and score in the same turn? No. Exchanging tiles uses your entire turn. You place 1-7 tiles face-down, draw replacements, then put the discarded tiles back in the bag. You cannot play a word and exchange in the same turn.

5. Does the first word have to cross the center star? Yes. The first word played must cover the center square (the star). This square acts as a double-word score for the opening play, giving the first player a slight scoring advantage.

6. Can you play a word that only connects diagonally? No. Every word must connect to existing tiles horizontally or vertically (sharing at least one letter with what's already on the board). Diagonal connections don't count — Scrabble only uses rows and columns.

7. Is QI a valid Scrabble word? Yes, in both SOWPODS and TWL. QI (also spelled CHI) is the circulating life force in Chinese philosophy. It's the most important Q-without-U word and one of the most played two-letter words in competitive Scrabble.

8. What is the difference between SOWPODS and TWL? TWL (Tournament Word List, ~187,000 words) is used in North America. SOWPODS (~270,000 words) combines TWL with the British dictionary and is used internationally. SOWPODS contains all TWL words plus ~83,000 additional entries.

9. Are abbreviations allowed in Scrabble? No standard abbreviations are allowed (TV, USA, DNA, etc.). However, some letter combinations that look like abbreviations are actually valid words in their own right — AA (a type of lava), AB (an abdominal muscle), AD (an advertisement) are all valid.

10. How often does the official Scrabble dictionary get updated? Major updates happen every 4-5 years. The most recent TWL update (TWL06 to NWL2020) added thousands of new words including ZEN, EMOJI, TWERK, and QOPH. SOWPODS (now called CSW) updates on a similar schedule.

11. Are slang words valid in Scrabble? Many are. If a slang word appears in the official dictionary, it's valid. YEET, BOUGIE, STAN, and FINNA have not been added yet, but DISS, BLING, and SELFIE are valid. The dictionary committee evaluates whether a word has sustained, widespread usage.

12. Can you play foreign words in Scrabble? Only if they appear in the official English Scrabble dictionary. Many words borrowed from other languages are valid: PIANO (Italian), KARATE (Japanese), SAFARI (Swahili), GURU (Hindi). But you can't use words that only exist in foreign dictionaries.

13. What is a bingo in Scrabble? A bingo is playing all 7 tiles from your rack in a single turn, earning a 50-point bonus. Expert players average 2-3 bingos per game. The bonus is added to the word's total score (letter values + premium squares), making bingos typically worth 65-125+ points.

14. Should I always play the highest-scoring word? No. Sometimes a lower-scoring play that leaves better tiles on your rack (the "leave") will score more over the next 2-3 turns combined. Rack management — balancing this turn's score against future potential — separates good players from great ones.

15. When should I exchange tiles? Exchange when: no play scores more than 15 points AND your leave would be terrible, OR you hold a rack like BCFGUVW with no scoring potential. Never exchange when fewer than 7 tiles remain in the bag (you won't draw enough to improve).

16. How important are two-letter words? Extremely. Two-letter words are used in almost every turn for parallel plays and crosswords. There are 107 valid two-letter words in SOWPODS. Learning all of them is the single highest-return study investment you can make.

17. What is "rack leave" in Scrabble? Rack leave is the tiles remaining on your rack after you make a play. A good leave (balanced vowels/consonants, no duplicates, bingo-stem tiles) sets you up for strong scoring next turn. Bad leaves (all vowels, all consonants, awkward letters) handicap your next play.

18. Is going first an advantage in Scrabble? Slightly. The first player gets the center double-word score bonus and sets the tempo. Statistical analysis shows the first player wins about 52-54% of the time among equal players. It's a small but measurable advantage.

19. How many tiles are in a standard Scrabble game? 100 tiles total: 98 lettered tiles plus 2 blanks. The distribution is based on letter frequency in English: E has 12 tiles, A and I have 9 each, while Q, Z, X, and J have 1 each.

20. What is the highest-scoring single turn possible? Theoretically, 1,778 points (OXYPHENBUTAZONE across three TWS). In actual tournament play, the highest verified single-turn score is 365 points. In casual play, scores above 150 for a single word are exceptional.

21. Do premium squares count twice? No. Premium squares (double/triple letter and word scores) only activate the first time a tile is placed on them. Once covered, they become regular squares. Later words passing through them don't get the bonus again.

22. How does a blank tile score on a premium square? A blank on a double or triple letter score still scores 0 (any multiplier × 0 = 0). However, a blank DOES contribute to word multipliers — if a word containing a blank crosses a double-word score, the entire word (including the blank's 0) is doubled.

23. What is a good average Scrabble score? Casual players average 200-250 points per game. Club players average 350-400. Expert tournament players average 400-450+. If you're consistently scoring 300+, you're above average. Scoring 400+ puts you in competitive territory.

24. How does scoring work when the game ends? When one player uses all their tiles (or both players pass twice consecutively), the game ends. The player who went out gets the total point value of their opponent's remaining tiles added to their score. Simultaneously, remaining tile values are subtracted from the holding player's score.

25. What size is a standard Scrabble board? The official Scrabble board is a 15×15 grid (225 squares total). It contains 24 double-letter scores (light blue), 12 double-word scores (pink), 12 triple-letter scores (dark blue), and 8 triple-word scores (red), plus the center star.

26. Can you play Scrabble with 2, 3, or 4 players? Scrabble works with 2-4 players. Two-player games are standard in competition (deepest strategy). Three-player games work well casually. Four-player games are possible but slower, with less strategic control since the board changes significantly between your turns.

29. Are word lists/solvers allowed in tournament Scrabble? Absolutely not during games. Using any reference material (word lists, electronic devices, solvers) during a tournament game is cheating and results in disqualification. Between games, you may study whatever you want. Solvers are study tools, not in-game tools.
