Dealing With Duplicate Tiles
Drawing duplicate tiles is one of Scrabble's most frustrating experiences. Two V's, two U's, or three I's on your rack instantly halves your word options and kills your bingo potential. But duplicates aren't random bad luck — they're a solvable problem. Knowing the right dump words, understanding when to exchange, and recognizing which duplicates are manageable versus catastrophic will transform these dead racks into manageable situations.

The Duplicate Severity Scale
Not all duplicates are equal. Some pairs barely hurt you; others are catastrophic. Understanding the severity helps you decide: play through it, or exchange?
Low Severity — Play Through
EE (GEESE, CREEP, TEETHE), SS (ASSESS, BOSS), TT (ATTIC, BUTTER, LATTE), LL (LLAMA, SCROLL), RR (MIRROR, PARROT). These pairs appear in hundreds of common words.
Medium Severity — Dump One Quickly
II (BIKINI, ALIBI), OO (VOODOO, BAMBOO), AA (AARDVARK — but 8 letters), DD (ADDED, DADDY), NN (NANNY, PENNANT). Options exist but are limited.
High Severity — Exchange if No Play Scores 15+
UU (only VACUUM, MUUMUU), VV (REVVED, SAVVY), WW (no common words), KK (TREKKED — 7 letters), CC (ACCRUE, STUCCO). Extremely limited options.
Essential Dump Words by Duplicate Type
Memorize these words. They're your emergency toolkit for getting rid of problematic duplicate tiles while still scoring.
Double V Dumps
VIVID (10pts), VALVE (11pts), SAVVY (14pts), REVVED (13pts), DIVVY (15pts), NAVVY (14pts)
Double U Dumps
VACUUM (13pts), MUUMUU (10pts), USURIOUS (uses 2 U), UNUSUAL (7pts), UNDUE (6pts — dumps 1 U cleanly)
Double I Dumps
BIKINI (12pts), ALIBI (7pts), INIA (4pts), TITIPI (8pts), MINI (6pts), INITIATE (uses 3 I)
Double W Dumps
WOW (9pts), POWWOW (16pts), BOWWOW (16pts). Very limited — exchange is often correct with WW.
The Exchange Decision for Duplicates
Sometimes no dump word scores enough to justify keeping the duplicate. Here's the framework:
🧩 Exchange Decision for Duplicates
Can you play a dump word scoring 15+? → Play it. Getting rid of one duplicate while scoring is always preferred.
Best dump word scores under 10 and leave is still bad? → Exchange the duplicates (keep your best 4-5 tiles).
Fewer than 7 tiles in the bag? → Never exchange. Play the best available word, even for 8 points.
You hold a blank or S alongside duplicates? → Exchange the duplicates, keep blank/S. The power tiles are too valuable to lose.
Prevention — Avoiding Duplicates Before They Happen
The best strategy for duplicates is never having them. Your rack leave after each play determines what you're likely to draw into.
💡 The Duplicate Prevention Rule
Never leave two of the same tile on your rack after a play unless they're part of a bingo stem. If you hold EET and play a word using one E and the T, you're leaving EE — which reduces next-draw flexibility. Better to play a word using both E's even for slightly less score.
✓ Good Leave Habits
Vary consonants and vowels. Keep no more than one of any tile. Prioritize playing one of any pair when choosing between close-scoring plays.
✗ Duplicate Traps
Keeping OO "because they're vowels." Holding II hoping for a long -TION word. Keeping UU because "there might be a Q." These leaves almost always hurt.
Words That Embrace Duplicates
