Why These 10 Words Matter
Scrabble gives you seven tiles at a time. Statistically, you'll draw high-value tiles like Q, Z, X, J, and K in roughly one out of every three racks. Most beginners panic when they see these tiles because the "obvious" words need supporting letters that might not be there. QU needs five more letters. JAZZ needs two Z tiles you'll never have simultaneously.

1. QI â The Most Important Word in Scrabble
QI

The life force or vital energy in Chinese philosophy (also romanised as chi or ki). This single word transforms the Q tile from Scrabble's biggest liability into a reliable scoring play. On a Triple Letter Score, QI scores 31 points from just two tiles.
QI is universally considered the most important word in competitive Scrabble. The Q tile is worth 10 points but there's only one U in most racks. Without QI, you're often forced to exchange the Q â wasting an entire turn. With QI memorised, you can play the Q tile on almost any board state, as long as there's an I anywhere you can reach.
2. ZA â The Z Tile's Best Friend
â What It Means
Short for pizza (South African slang). Valid in SOWPODS. An informal word adopted into the official Scrabble dictionary.

Z is worth 10 points. ZA only needs an A â the most common tile in the bag (9 copies). You'll almost always have one available.
ZA scores 11 points base and fits into incredibly tight spaces. Because A is the most common vowel tile, you can reliably play ZA whenever you draw the Z. It also extends easily â ZAP, ZAG, ZAX are all valid follow-ups if you want to build on it later.
3. OX â Simple, Powerful, Versatile
OX means a castrated bull â a word everyone knows but few think to play. At 9 points (O=1, X=8), it's one of the easiest high-scoring plays available. The real power of OX is its extensions: BOX, COX, FOX, GOX, HOX, LOX, NOX, POX, SOX, VOX, and OXO, OXEN, OXES, OXID. That's over a dozen words built from one two-letter foundation.

4. XI â The Greek Letter Play
XI is the 14th letter of the Greek alphabet (the one that looks like Î). It scores 9 points (X=8, I=1) and pairs the X tile with the second-most common letter in the bag. XI is particularly useful in parallel plays â laying it alongside an existing word to score in both directions simultaneously.
Like QI, XI uses the extremely common I tile (there are 9 copies in a standard bag). This means whenever you have an X, you can almost certainly play either XI or one of the other X words on this list.
5. XU â The Vietnamese Coin

A monetary unit of Vietnam, equal to one hundredth of a dong. Valid in SOWPODS and TWL.

Gives you a third X-play option (alongside XI and AX). With XI, XU, AX, EX, and OX, you have FIVE two-letter X words â the X tile never gets stuck.
XU scores 9 points and provides redundancy for your X plays. Between XI, XU, AX, EX, and OX you have five different two-letter options for the X tile. This means no matter what vowels or consonants surround your target square, you can almost always find a valid X placement.
6. JO â Unlock the J Tile
JO is a Scottish word for sweetheart (think "bonnie lass" territory). The J tile is worth 8 points but has very few short-word options â JO is your primary outlet. At 9 points base (J=8, O=1), it turns a difficult tile into an easy score. JO also extends to JOB, JOE, JOG, JOT, JOW, JOY â all common words you already know.

7. AX â The Chopping Play
AX is the American spelling of axe â a tool for chopping. Everyone knows this word, yet beginners rarely think to play it. At 9 points (A=1, X=8), AX combines the most common vowel with the third-highest-value consonant. It extends beautifully too: AXE, AXED, AXEL, AXES, AXLE. Each extension maintains the high X-value while building longer words.
AX is particularly strong as a parallel play. Drop it next to an existing word so both the A and X form new words in the perpendicular direction, and you score the X tile in both directions.
8. EX â The Prefix That Scores
EX means a former partner (as in "my ex") and is valid as a standalone two-letter word. At 9 points (E=1, X=8), it pairs the second-most common tile in the bag with X. The beauty of EX is that it's also a prefix â EXAM, EXIT, EXPO, EXUDE â making it a natural stepping stone to longer words as your vocabulary grows.
Tip: EX works as both a standalone score and a bridge to longer words. Play EX now, then later extend it to EXAM or EXIT for even more points on your next turn.
Tip: With E being the most common tile (12 copies in the bag), you will almost always have access to EX when you draw the X. It's your most reliable X-word backup.
9. KA â The Egyptian Spirit
KA is the Egyptian word for the spirit or vital force believed to inhabit a body. The K tile is worth 5 points â less than Q, Z, X, or J â but it's still a premium tile that beginners struggle with. KA scores 6 points (K=5, A=1) and gives you a simple two-letter dump for K when nothing longer works.
While 6 points seems modest compared to QI's 11, KA's real value is tempo. Instead of wasting a turn exchanging the K or forcing a low-scoring longer word, you play KA in a tight spot, score your 6 points, and draw a fresh tile that might unlock a bingo on your next turn.
10. QAT â The Q Without U Powerhouse

An evergreen shrub (Catha edulis) whose leaves are chewed as a stimulant in East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. QAT gives you a second Q-without-U option beyond QI, and at 12 points it's actually higher-scoring than its two-letter cousin.
QAT is your insurance policy. If the I tiles are all played or blocked, QAT gives you another escape route for the Q tile. It uses A and T â both extremely common tiles â so you'll rarely be stuck. Having both QI and QAT memorised means the Q tile is never a problem for you again.
