9 min read Word Finder

Four-letter words are the secret weapons of competitive Scrabble. While beginners chase bingos, experts know that a well-placed QUIZ on a triple-letter square scores more than many seven-letter plays. These compact power words fit into tight board positions, hit premium squares with precision, and leave you with more tiles to draw — fueling your next big play.

The Elite Tier — 20+ Point Words

These are the crown jewels of four-letter Scrabble. Every competitive player should have these memorised cold — they represent the highest possible return from just four tiles.

💡 JAZZ is Special

JAZZ scores 29 points base — the highest of any common 4-letter word. On a triple word square with the J on a double letter, you're looking at 100+ points from four tiles. That's bingo-level scoring without needing seven tiles or the 50-point bonus.

Z-Words — The 10-Point Foundation

The Z tile (10 points) is the backbone of four-letter power plays. These words combine Z with common letters that you'll frequently have on your rack.

ZANY16 pts ZONE13 pts ZERO13 pts ZEAL13 pts ZINC15 pts MAZE15 pts HAZE16 pts FIZZ25 pts FUZZ25 pts BUZZ24 pts

Double-Z words (FIZZ, FUZZ, BUZZ, JAZZ) are particularly devastating because they contain 20 points in Z tiles alone. Combined with even modest supporting letters, these routinely score 40+ with a single word square bonus.

✓ Z + Common Letters

ZONE, ZERO, ZEAL — pair Z with letters you'll almost always have (E, O, A, N, R). When you draw Z, scan for these combinations first before looking for exotic plays.

✓ Z + High-Value Partners

ZINC (Z+C), HAZE (Z+H), ZANY (Z+Y) — secondary high-value tiles boost the Z for even bigger base scores. Aim these at double/triple word squares for maximum impact.

J and X Power Plays

The J (8 points) and X (8 points) tiles combine naturally with common English letter patterns. Four-letter J and X words give you reliable scoring options almost every game.

Word Points Notes
JIVE14J + V = 12 in power letters alone
JOKE15J + K gives huge base value
JADE12Common letters make it easy to form
LYNX14X + Y for 12 pts in two tiles
APEX13Ends in X — great for edge plays
JINX18J + X = 16 power tile points
JEUX18J + X; valid in SOWPODS (games)

🔬 The JINX and JEUX Factor

Both JINX and JEUX combine J (8) + X (8) = 16 points in power tiles alone. These are the only common 4-letter words with two 8+ point tiles. If you hold both J and X simultaneously, these are almost always your best play.

Premium Square Strategy for 4-Letter Words

The real power of four-letter words comes from premium square alignment. Short words are far easier to position precisely on bonus squares compared to 6-7 letter plays.

Target TLS with power tiles: Place Q, Z, X, or J directly on a triple-letter square. QUIZ with Q on TLS = 10×3 + 1 + 1 + 10 = 42 points from four tiles. That's bingo-level scoring without needing seven tiles.

DWS/TWS with high base: Words like JAZZ (29 base) or FIZZ (25 base) on a double word square hit 50+ effortlessly. Position the word so the entire score doubles rather than just one letter.

Parallel plays multiply: Playing a 4-letter word parallel to an existing word creates 2-4 crosswords simultaneously. Each scores independently — a 12-point word can generate 30-40 total with parallel crosses.

Edge control: Four-letter words along board edges leave fewer hooks for opponents. ONYX along row 1 or column 15 limits counter-attacks while scoring full points.
