Front Hooks to Memorize
Front hooks are the stealth weapons of Scrabble. While your opponent guards against obvious back hooks (plurals, -ED, -ING), they forget that adding a single letter before their word can transform it entirely. C before OVER makes COVER. S before TRAIN makes STRAIN. Master front hooks and you'll find scoring plays your opponents never anticipate.
Why Front Hooks Give You an Edge
Front hooks exploit a cognitive blind spot. Most players think forward (left to right) when placing words, making front positions invisible threats.
✓ Front Hook Advantages
Rarely defended against. Can place high-value tiles on leftward premium squares. Creates parallel scoring opportunities above/below.
⚡ Tactical Use
Play your main word going down. The front hook letter going left creates a second word. Score both simultaneously.

Training Your Front-Hook Vision
Most players scan boards left-to-right looking for openings after words. Train yourself to also scan the spaces before words.
Board scan drill: For every word on the board, mentally ask "What letter before this word makes a new word?" Do this for 5 minutes per practice game.
Rack matching: Look at your rack, then look at every word on the board. Can any tile from your rack front-hook any board word? This should be your first scan each turn.
Flash card practice: Write 50 common board words on cards. Flip each card and name all valid front hooks within 5 seconds. Mark misses for extra review.
