How to Use Blank Tiles in Scrabble — The 50-Point Key
Blank tiles are worth 0 points — yet they're the most valuable tiles in Scrabble. Why? Because they're the key to bingos. A blank can represent any letter, filling whatever gap stands between your rack and a 7-letter word worth 50 bonus points. Knowing when to save them and when to spend them separates casual players from winners.

When to Save the Blank
You have a bingo stem: If your rack contains ING, TION, ED, ER plus 3-4 good tiles, keep the blank. You only need 1 more letter to complete a 7-letter word — and the blank IS that letter.
It's early or mid game: With 60+ tiles still in the bag, you'll draw into bingo-friendly racks. Patience pays. Tournament players hold blanks for 2-3 turns on average before using them.
Your rack is balanced: 3-4 consonants, 2-3 vowels, plus the blank = strong bingo potential. Don't waste it on a 20-point play when a 70-point bingo is 1-2 turns away.
When to Play Without a Bingo
✓ 40+ Point Play
If a 5-6 letter word on a TWS scores 40+ using the blank, take it. That's competitive with many bingos.
✓ Defensive Block
Opponent has a TWS open with high-value tiles? Use the blank to block and score simultaneously.
⚠️ Endgame
With fewer than 10 tiles remaining, bingo odds plummet. Use the blank for the best available play.
⚠️ Setup Play
Using the blank now sets up a guaranteed 50+ point follow-up on your next turn.
💡 Tournament Insight
Top players estimate a blank's true value at 25 points. If using it only gains 10 points over your next-best option, you've lost 15 points of value. Always compare: "What does the blank add vs. playing without it?"
