Invalid Words People Think Are Valid in Scrabble
Nothing stings more than confidently placing tiles on the board only to have your word challenged and removed. Many everyday English words that seem perfectly reasonable are actually banned from Scrabble â proper nouns, abbreviations, hyphenated words, and recent slang that hasn't made it into the official dictionary. This guide covers the most common traps so you never waste a turn on an invalid play.

Proper Nouns â The Most Common Mistake
The single most frequent illegal play in casual Scrabble is attempting a proper noun. These are names of specific people, places, brands, or organizations â and they're never valid, no matter how common.
| Invalid Word | Why Invalid | Valid Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| WIFI | Brand name / trademark | WIFED, WIFE |
| Brand name | GOGGLE, OGLE | |
| PARIS | Place name | PAIRS, PARIS (lowercase = plaster) |
| TEXAN | Demonym (proper adjective) | TAXEN (not valid), TEXT |
| BIBLE | Religious proper noun | LIBEL, BILE |
| JACUZZI | Brand name | JAZZY, FIZZ |
| XEROX | Brand name | DETOX, OXER |
đĄ The Lowercase Test
A simple rule: if a word requires a capital letter in standard writing, it's almost certainly invalid in Scrabble. The dictionary only includes words that can appear in lowercase as common nouns, verbs, or adjectives.
Abbreviations and Acronyms
Even extremely common abbreviations are off-limits. If it's a shortened form of a longer word or phrase, it doesn't count â with a few interesting exceptions.
â Always Invalid
TV, IQ, DVD, CEO, NASA, FAQ, URL, HTML, GPS, ATM, VIP, DIY, ASAP, FYI, LOL, OMG, RSVP â all abbreviations or acronyms that never appear as lowercase dictionary entries.
â Former Acronyms Now Valid
RADAR (radio detection and ranging), SCUBA (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus), LASER (light amplification...) â these became common words and entered the dictionary as lowercase entries.
Slang and Modern Words Not Yet Added
The Scrabble dictionary updates periodically, but it lags behind everyday language by years. Many words you use daily haven't been officially added yet.
Note that BINGE is valid â it predates streaming culture. But BINGEING (with the E) was only recently added. Always verify with the official word list before playing modern-sounding words in tournament games.
Hyphenated and Multi-Word Terms
If a word requires a hyphen or space in standard writing, it cannot be played in Scrabble. The board only accepts single, unbroken strings of letters.
Common Hyphenated Traps
WELL-KNOWN, MOTHER-IN-LAW, X-RAY, T-SHIRT, RE-ENTER, CO-PILOT â none of these can be played because Scrabble tiles can only form single continuous words. However, WELLKNOWN as one word is also invalid because the dictionary lists it hyphenated.
Strategy Tips
When in doubt, don't play it: If you're unsure whether a word is valid, find an alternative. The risk of losing your turn (and giving your opponent a free play) outweighs the potential points from an uncertain word.
Challenge strategically: If your opponent plays a word you suspect is invalid, consider the board state. Challenge only when the word scores high enough to matter â don't waste a challenge on a 6-point word in a close game.
Know the gray areas: Some words are valid in TWL but not SOWPODS, or vice versa. Before tournament play, confirm which dictionary you're using. OK is the most famous example â valid in TWL since 2014 but not in Collins.
Use a word checker before games: Our Word Finder validates every word against both TWL and SOWPODS. Practice with it to build confidence about which words in your mental vocabulary are actually playable.
