Is EW a Scrabble Word? SOWPODS Only — NOT Valid in TWL
EW — that instinctive expression of disgust — became one of the most debated additions to the Scrabble lexicon when Collins added it in 2014. Valid in SOWPODS for international play but rejected by TWL for North American tournaments, EW sits at the intersection of informal language and competitive word games.

What Does EW Mean?
📖 Definition
EW is an interjection expressing disgust, distaste, or revulsion. It's the written form of the vocal reaction to something unpleasant — "Ew, that's gross!" Widely used in texting, social media, and informal writing.
The Controversy
EW divided the Scrabble community when Collins added it:
For inclusion
EW is widely used and understood. Dictionaries should reflect actual language use. Other interjections (HM, SH, OI) are already valid.
Against inclusion
Interjections are sounds, not real words. Adding every utterance devalues the dictionary. Where's the line?
When to Play EW
W-tile dump: At 5 points, EW isn't a power play — but useful for shedding a W in tight spots during Collins games. Best when forming cross-words simultaneously.
Parallel plays: E is common on boards, so EW often fits parallel formations. The W adds 4 points per cross-word formed.
Better alternatives: WE (5pts), OW (5pts), AW (5pts) are all valid in BOTH dictionaries and achieve similar results. Only use EW when no other 2-letter W word fits.
