The Chunking Principle
Your working memory holds 7±2 items. Seven individual tiles fill it completely. But if you chunk TH-ING into one unit and RE- into another, suddenly your rack of RETHING is only 3 chunks: RE + TH + ING. Your brain freed up capacity to see the word RETHING... which isn't valid, but what about rearranging? NIGHTRE... no. THERING... RING + THE... GITHERN? No — but you've now processed the rack far faster than letter-by-letter scanning.

Expert players don't see 7 tiles. They see 2-3 meaningful chunks that they can rearrange mentally. The faster you chunk, the more combinations you test per second.

Suffix Patterns
-ING, -ED, -ER, -EST, -TION, -NESS, -LY, -ABLE, -MENT. Spot these first, then find the root word in remaining tiles.
Prefix Patterns
RE-, UN-, OUT-, OVER-, MIS-, PRE-, DIS-. Strip these mentally to reveal the base word hiding in your rack.
Consonant Clusters

Suffix strip (2 min): Given 10 random 7-letter racks, identify which suffix patterns are present. Time yourself — target under 3 seconds per rack.
Prefix hunt (2 min): Same 10 racks, now look for prefix patterns. Many racks have both — RE + word + ED = a common structure.
Cluster spotting (3 min): Identify all consonant and vowel clusters. Mentally group TH, ING, QU as single units. Count how many chunks remain.
Full solve (5 min): Using patterns identified in steps 1-3, find the highest-scoring valid word from each rack. Check against solver.

Advanced: Multi-Layer Pattern Stacking
Once you can spot individual patterns quickly, the next level is stacking them. A rack like UNRESTED contains UN + RE + ST + ED — four patterns layered together. Expert players decompose and recompose these layers in milliseconds.
Layer 1 — Suffix: Strip -ED, -ING, -ER from the end. What remains? Is it a valid root?
Layer 2 — Prefix: After stripping suffix, check if remaining tiles contain RE-, UN-, OUT-. Strip that too.
Layer 3 — Core word: What's left after both strips? Is it a word itself? Can you rearrange it into one?
Layer 4 — Recombine: Try different prefix-root-suffix combinations. UNREST+ED? UN+RESTED? RE+DUNEST? Play with the layers.
Measuring Your Pattern Speed
Track your improvement with concrete benchmarks. Use a timer and 20 random racks for each test session:
If you plateau at intermediate speed, the issue is usually that you're scanning all possible patterns sequentially rather than in parallel. The fix: practice with shorter racks (4-5 tiles) until pattern detection is automatic, then scale back up to 7.
Pattern Recognition During Board Play
In-game pattern recognition extends beyond your rack. You need to see patterns in the board state too — open lanes, hook opportunities, and letter combinations formed by intersecting plays.

Before looking at your rack, scan the board for 5 seconds. Look for open suffixes (words ending where you can add -ED, -S, -ING) and open prefixes (words starting where you can prepend RE-, UN-). Then check if your rack supplies the missing letters.
