The Essential Five — Must-Know Q-No-U Words
You don't need to memorize all 33 words. These five cover 90% of Q-without-U situations you'll encounter in actual games:
QI — 11 pts (2 letters)
The life force in Chinese philosophy. Your #1 emergency Q play. Fits anywhere, scores well on premium squares. On DLS: 21 pts from 2 tiles.
QAT — 12 pts (3 letters)
A plant whose leaves are chewed as a stimulant. Only needs Q+A+T — all common tiles. Great 3-letter emergency play.
QADI — 14 pts (4 letters)
An Islamic judge. Q+A+D+I are all common rack letters, making this highly playable when you draw Q without U.
QOPH — 18 pts (4 letters)
The 19th letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Scores big at 18 points thanks to the H (4 pts) and P (3 pts). One of the best short Q plays.
QANAT — 14 pts (5 letters)
An underground irrigation tunnel. Uses Q+A+N+A+T — very common tiles. The double-A makes this easier to play than it looks.
Strategy Tips
QI is non-negotiable: Every Scrabble player must know QI. It's the single most played Q word in competitive Scrabble. At 11 points for 2 tiles (5.5 pts/tile), it has one of the highest point-per-tile ratios in the game.
Play Q early if no U is coming: Track the U tiles. If all 4 U tiles are played or on opponent's rack, don't hold Q hoping — play QI or QAT immediately. A 12-point QAT now beats a 0-point Q penalty at game end.
QOPH on premium squares is devastating: QOPH scores 18 base points. On a double-word, that's 36. On a triple-word with Q on the premium, you're looking at 54+ points from 4 tiles.
Plurals extend your options: QADIS, QAIDS, QATS, QOPHS, TRANQS — knowing the plural forms gives you flexibility. If QADI doesn't fit, QADIS might reach a better square.
TRANQ is your late-game weapon: TRANQ (14 pts) uses common end-game tiles (T, R, A, N). When the bag is empty and you're stuck with Q, TRANQ often saves you from a 10-point penalty.
