Science vocabulary is a secret weapon for Scrabble players. Terms from chemistry, biology, and physics are packed with high-value letters — X in OXYGEN, Z in ENZYME, Q in QUARTZ. These aren't obscure jargon either; most are common English words that happen to originate from scientific contexts.

Strategy Tips for Science Words

QUARTZ is your Q+Z powerhouse: At 24 points base, QUARTZ uses both the Q (10) and Z (10) tiles in one word. On a DWS, that's 48 points. It uses common letters (U, A, R, T) making it relatively drawable.

ENZYME is an underrated scorer: At 20 points for 6 letters, ENZYME scores almost as well as many 7-letter bingos. The EN- prefix is common, making it a natural extension when you hold -ZYME tiles.

Short science words for tight spots: AXON (11 pts, 4 letters), ION (3 pts, hooks everywhere), OHM (8 pts), and ARC (5 pts) fit narrow board positions and create excellent parallel play opportunities.

Science prefixes multiply options: OXIDE becomes OXIDES, PROTON becomes PROTONS, OZONE becomes OZONES. The -IC suffix (IONIC, OPTIC, SONIC) and -AL suffix (RENAL, TONAL) open many plays.

ZINC is your best short Z word: At 15 points for just 4 letters, ZINC offers nearly 4 points per tile. It hooks easily (ZINCS, ZINCY) and the I-N-C pattern fits many board states.
