Every Valid Q-Without-U Word in Scrabble
The Q tile is worth 10 points but comes with a catch: it almost always needs a U to be playable. Almost. There are 33 words in the SOWPODS dictionary that use Q without U — and memorizing even the top 5 can transform the Q from a liability into a weapon. This is the complete reference: every valid Q-without-U word, scored, defined, and strategized.

Why Q-Without-U Words Matter
The Q tile is worth 10 points — tied with Z as the highest-value tile in Scrabble. But unlike Z (which has ZA, ZO, ZAP, and dozens of easy plays), Q traditionally requires U to function. Since there are only 4 U tiles in the bag, drawing Q without access to U can cost you 10+ points in endgame penalties and multiple turns of reduced scoring.
Q-without-U words eliminate this dependency entirely. Knowing these words means Q becomes a scoring opportunity rather than a strategic burden. The most useful — QI — needs only one other tile and fits almost anywhere on the board.
💡 The Q Problem Solved
Before Q-without-U words were added to dictionaries, the Q was strictly a 10-point liability without U. Now, knowing just QI turns it into a 20-60 point opportunity on premium squares. Every competitive player memorizes these words.

The Must-Know Five
You don't need to memorize all 33. These five words cover 95% of Q-without-U situations you'll encounter in actual games:
QI (11 pts): The essential Q word. Only 2 tiles needed, fits anywhere there's an I on the board. On a TLS, QI scores 31. On a DWS, it scores 22. You'll play this word hundreds of times in your Scrabble career.
QOPH (18 pts): Hebrew letter name. Scores well and uses common tiles (O, P, H are frequently available). Playable when QI isn't an option due to board position.
QANAT (14 pts): An irrigation tunnel. Uses 3 A's plus N and T — all common tiles. Good mid-game dump when you're vowel-heavy with Q.
QADI (14 pts): Islamic judge. Short, uses common tiles (A, D, I). Pluralizes to QADIS for an extra point and the S stays on your rack's terms.
SUQ (12 pts): Middle Eastern market. Only 3 tiles needed. The S in front means you can hook it onto existing words. A quick emergency dump.
Longer Q-Without-U Words
For advanced players, these longer words score higher but require more specific tile combinations:
QWERTY is the highest-scoring at 21 base points (Q=10, W=4, E=1, R=1, T=1, Y=4). However, it requires 6 specific tiles on your rack simultaneously — making it more of a fun fact than a reliable strategy. FAQIR (17 pts) and WAQF (19 pts) are more achievable since their letter combinations occur more naturally.
Scoring Strategies for Q-Without-U
Playing Q-without-U words isn't just about dumping the Q — it's about maximizing its 10-point value through premium square placement.
QI on TLS = 31 pts
Place Q on a triple letter score: Q(30) + I(1) = 31 points from just 2 tiles. Best ratio in the game.
QI on DWS = 22 pts
Double word score doubles both tiles: (Q10 + I1) × 2 = 22. Still excellent for a 2-tile play.
Parallel QI = 30+ pts
Play QI parallel to an existing word, scoring in both directions simultaneously. Can reach 40-60 points.
QOPH on DWS = 36 pts
QOPH (18) doubled = 36. A strong mid-game play that clears the Q efficiently.
When to Hold Q vs Exchange
🧩 Q Decision Framework
Board has accessible I (adjacent to open square) → Play QI immediately for premium square points.
Bag has 15+ tiles remaining → Hold Q for 1-2 turns. You may draw U, or an I may appear on the board.
Bag has fewer than 10 tiles, no U visible → Exchange Q immediately. The endgame penalty (-10) is worse than losing a turn.
You have Q + other garbage tiles → Exchange Q along with the bad tiles. Get a fresh rack.
Q-Without-U Words in TWL vs SOWPODS
Not all Q-without-U words are valid in both dictionaries. If you play in North American tournaments (TWL/NWL), some SOWPODS-only words will be challenged off the board.
✓ Valid in Both TWL + SOWPODS
QI, QOPH, QANAT, QADI, SUQ, QINTAR, QINDAR, QWERTY, TRANQ, FAQIR, QAID, QAIDS, QADIS, QANATS, QINTARS, QINDARS, TRANQS
✗ SOWPODS Only (not TWL)
WAQF, QAT, QATS, MBAQANGA, QOPH variants, and several other international borrowings not accepted in North American play.
💡 Tournament Tip
Always know which dictionary your tournament uses. Playing a SOWPODS-only word in a TWL tournament means losing both the word's points AND your turn if challenged. When in doubt, stick to QI — it's valid everywhere.
