Game Setup

Setting up a Scrabble game takes about 2 minutes. Here is the official process step by step.

🧩 Setup Steps

1

Place the board on a flat surface. All 100 tiles go face-down in the bag (or lid) and are mixed thoroughly.

2

Each player draws one tile to determine who goes first. Closest to A goes first (blank beats A). Return tiles and remix.

3

Each player draws 7 tiles and places them on their rack, hidden from opponents.

4

The first player places a word on the board so that one letter covers the center star (H8). This word scores double.

How Turns Work

On each turn, a player has three options: play a word, exchange tiles, or pass. Most turns involve playing a word.

Option 1: Play a Word

Place one or more tiles on the board to form a valid word. The word must connect to existing tiles (except the first play). All new words formed (including cross-words) must be valid. Draw replacement tiles from the bag to refill your rack to 7.

Option 2: Exchange Tiles

If at least 7 tiles remain in the bag, you may exchange 1–7 tiles. Place unwanted tiles face-down, draw the same number of new tiles, then return old tiles to the bag. You score 0 points for this turn.

Option 3: Pass

You may pass your turn without playing or exchanging. Score 0 points. If all players pass twice consecutively, the game ends immediately.

πŸ’‘ Key Rule

Every word played must connect to the existing tiles on the board (crossword-style). You cannot place isolated words. All tiles must be in a single row or column, and every new word formed β€” including cross-words created by your tiles touching existing letters β€” must be valid.

Scoring System

Scoring in Scrabble combines individual tile values with board multipliers. Understanding this system is essential for competitive play.

🧩 How to Calculate Score

1

Add the point values of ALL letters in the word (including letters already on the board that you are building through)

2

Apply letter multipliers FIRST (DL = Γ—2, TL = Γ—3) to individual tiles placed on those squares this turn

3

Apply word multipliers LAST (DW = Γ—2, TW = Γ—3) to the entire word total. If covering two word multipliers, multiply sequentially

4

Add 50 bonus points if you used all 7 tiles from your rack (a "bingo"). Premium squares only apply on the turn they are first covered

Premium Squares Explained

The Scrabble board has 61 premium squares that multiply letter or word values. They only apply when a tile is FIRST placed on them β€” not on subsequent turns.

🟦 Double Letter (DL)

24 squares on the board. Doubles the value of the single tile placed on it. Best with high-value tiles (Q, Z, X, J, K). A Z on DL = 20 points for one tile.

🟦 Triple Letter (TL)

12 squares on the board. Triples the value of the single tile placed on it. Z on TL = 30 points. Q on TL = 30 points. The most impactful letter squares.

πŸŸ₯ Double Word (DW)

17 squares (including center star). Doubles the entire word score after all letter multipliers are applied. The center star is a DW β€” first word always scores double.

πŸŸ₯ Triple Word (TW)

8 squares in the corners and edges. Triples the entire word score. The most powerful squares on the board. A 7-letter word across TW can score 100+ points.

Challenges and Disputes

When a player places a word you believe is invalid, you can challenge it. Challenge rules vary between casual and tournament play.

βœ“ Successful Challenge

If the challenged word is NOT in the dictionary, the player removes all tiles placed that turn, scores 0, and loses their turn. Tiles return to their rack.

βœ— Failed Challenge

If the word IS valid, the challenger loses their next turn (in tournament "double challenge" rules). In casual play, there is often no penalty for a failed challenge.

Challenge timing: A challenge must be made BEFORE the next player draws replacement tiles. Once tiles are drawn, the previous play is accepted as valid and cannot be challenged.

Electronic adjudication: Most tournaments now use a word judge device or app. The player types the challenged word and gets an instant valid/invalid ruling β€” no human judge needed.

End of Game and Final Scoring

The game ends when one player uses their last tile with no tiles remaining in the bag, or when all players pass consecutively twice. Final scoring adjusts for unplayed tiles.

πŸ’‘ Endgame Scoring

The player who goes out (uses all tiles) adds the total value of all opponents' remaining tiles to their score. Each opponent subtracts their unplayed tile values from their own score. This creates a significant swing β€” going out first with an opponent holding Q (10pts) creates a 20-point advantage.

Common Rule Disputes Settled

Every household has Scrabble arguments. Here are the official rulings on the most common disputes.

Can you use proper nouns?

No. Proper nouns (names, places, brands) are never valid in Scrabble. However, words that happen to share spelling with proper nouns are fine if they have a common definition (e.g., CHINA as pottery, TURKEY as a bird).

Can you play the same word twice?

Yes. Any valid word can be played multiple times in the same game by different players or even the same player β€” there is no "used word" restriction.

Does the blank tile keep its letter?

Yes. Once a blank is placed and designated as a specific letter, it remains that letter for the rest of the game. It cannot be changed or picked up. The blank is worth 0 points even when representing a high-value letter.

Can you add letters to both ends of a word?

Yes. You can extend an existing word by adding letters to either or both ends in a single turn, as long as all tiles are placed in one row or column and all resulting words are valid.

Do premium squares apply on later turns?

No. Premium squares (DL, TL, DW, TW) only apply on the turn a tile is FIRST placed on them. Once covered, they act as normal squares for all future scoring calculations.
