Scrabble Rack Leave Analysis — What to Keep After Every Play
Every Scrabble play is two decisions: what you play and what you keep. Most players focus only on score. Tournament players know that the tiles you leave behind determine your next three turns. A 5-point sacrifice now for a better leave can yield 20+ extra points over the next two draws.

Good Leave Advantage
The Synergy Tiles — S, A, T, I, R, E, N
These seven letters produce more bingos than any other combination. Tournament databases show that racks containing 5+ of these letters hit bingos over 60% of the time. When choosing between two plays of similar score, keep the one that leaves more SATIREN tiles.
Tiles to Dump First
Some tiles actively harm your rack synergy. Prioritise playing these even if it means scoring 5-10 fewer points:
⚠️ Duplicate Vowels
Two of the same vowel (AA, II, UU) clog your rack. Play one immediately — don't keep both hoping for consonants.
⚠️ V and W Together
V=4 and W=4 both need vowels to function. Keeping both starves you of consonant flexibility. Dump one per turn.
⚠️ Q Without U Access
If no U is visible on the board or your rack, consider exchanging Q. The 10 points it offers rarely compensate for 3+ turns of dead weight.
⚠️ Multiple High-Point Tiles
J+X or Z+Q together is a nightmare. You can't use both in one play and they block bingo potential. Play one, keep the other.
Leave Evaluation by Size
1-tile leave: Best leaves are S, blank, E, or R. Worst are V, U, or Q. With one tile, you draw 6 — so almost any single SATIREN letter gives you bingo potential.
2-tile leave: Ideal: one vowel + one consonant from SATIREN (e.g., ER, AT, IN). Avoid two vowels or two of the same letter. ER leave outperforms QU leave by 15+ points on average next turn.
3-tile leave: The sweet spot for bingo setup. ING, ERS, ATE, and ENT are elite 3-tile leaves. You draw 4 tiles — enough to complete most 7-letter words with the right combination.
💡 Key Insight
A play scoring 30 with a leave of ER is usually better than a play scoring 38 with a leave of QV. The expected value of your next turn matters more than maximising this turn. Think two moves ahead.
