Technique 1: Word Families
Group words by shared patterns rather than memorising randomly. Your brain stores related items together naturally.
🔤 By ending
Learn all -AZE words together: BLAZE, CRAZE, DAZE, FAZE, GAZE, GLAZE, GRAZE, HAZE, MAZE, RAZE
🔤 By letter
All J words under 5 letters: JO, JOB, JOT, JOY, JAB, JAG, JAM, JAR, JAW, JAY, JET, JIG, JIN
🔤 By theme
Cooking words: WHISK, KNEAD, CHOP, BASTE, BRAISE, BLANCH, FLAMBE, POACH, SAUTE
🔤 By hook
Words that take S: AX→AXES, OX→OXEN, BOX→BOXED. Learn base + extensions together.
Technique 2: Mnemonics & Stories
Two-letter X words: "AX the eX" — AX, EX, OX, XI, XU. Five words, one silly phrase. Say it three times and you'll never forget the complete X two-letter list.
Q without U words: "QI is energy, QOPH is a letter, QAT is a plant, QANAT is a tunnel." Four sentences, four critical Q-no-U words memorised with definitions that create mental images.
Acronym method: For the SATIRE bingo stem (one of the most prolific), remember "SATIRE makes IRATES, AIREST, TERAIS" — all anagram-able from the same 6 letters plus one more.
Technique 3: Spaced Repetition
The 1-3-7-30 Rule
Review at increasing intervals for permanent memory
Learn 10 words today. Review them tomorrow (day 1), again on day 3, again on day 7, and once more on day 30. After four reviews at increasing intervals, those words move into long-term memory. This is the same technique medical students use for anatomy.
Daily Practice Routine
🧩 15-Minute Daily Schedule
5 min: Review yesterday's words (quick flash through)
5 min: Learn 5-10 new words with definitions and scores
5 min: Play one practice rack — find all words from 7 random tiles
💡 Key Insight
Memory in Scrabble is a trained skill, not a talent. Players who know 30,000+ words didn't memorise them in a weekend. They used word families, mnemonics, and spaced repetition daily for months. Start with 15 minutes a day and you'll see results within weeks.
