Maximizing Premium Squares in Scrabble

6 min read Word Finder

The difference between a 300-point game and a 500-point game comes down to premium squares. Those coloured cells are score multipliers — and the players who consistently land high-value tiles on them dominate every game. Understanding which squares to target, when to sacrifice position for points, and how to stack multipliers separates good players from great ones.

Premium Square Types

DLS — Double Letter (×24)

Doubles one tile's value. Best for Z=20, Q=20, X=16, J=16 on this square.

TLS — Triple Letter (×12)

Triples one tile. Z on TLS = 30pts from one tile alone. The biggest single-tile boost.

DWS — Double Word (×17)

Doubles entire word after letter bonuses. Best with long, high-scoring words.

TWS — Triple Word (×8)

Triples entire word. Only 8 exist. A 30-point word becomes 90. Most impactful squares.

Placement Tactics

💡 The Golden Rule

Put high-value tiles on letter multipliers (TLS/DLS) and long words on word multipliers (TWS/DWS). Z on a TLS in a word on TWS = devastating score.

TLS + high tile = instant power: Z (10pts) on TLS = 30. In word ZAP on TWS with Z on TLS: (30+1+3)×3 = 102 points for a 3-letter word.

Stack multipliers: When a word crosses both TLS and DWS, the letter is tripled first, then the word total is doubled. Letter bonuses always apply before word bonuses.

Cross-word bonus: When your word creates a perpendicular word crossing a premium square, BOTH words get the bonus. This is how parallel plays score so high.

One-tile premium reach: Extend existing words by one tile to reach a premium square. Hook an S or D onto an existing word that sits near a TWS.

The Triple-Triple — Ultimate Play

👑 Legendary

×9 MULTIPLIER

Two TWS squares in one play = word score × 9

A 7-letter bingo across two TWS squares can score 500+ points in a single turn. These are rare but game-defining moments that tournament players constantly watch for.

When to Avoid Premium Squares

✓ Target Premiums When...

You have high-value tiles, can score 30+, or when denying your opponent access.

✗ Avoid Premiums When...

Your play opens a TWS for your opponent with only low-value tiles. A 15-point play that gives away 50 is a net loss.
