Premium squares are what separate a 15-point play from a 45-point play. Understanding exactly how each multiplier works — and how they stack — is fundamental to competitive Scrabble. Here's the complete breakdown of every scoring zone on the board.

TWS Squares

The Four Premium Square Types

💎 Double Letter (DLS)

Light blue. Doubles one tile's value. Best for Z(20), Q(20), X(16), J(16).

🌸 Double Word (DWS)

Pink. Doubles the entire word score. Center star is DWS for opening.

💠 Triple Letter (TLS)

Dark blue. Triples one tile. Z on TLS = 30 points from one tile.

🔴 Triple Word (TWS)

Red (corners + mid-edges). Triples entire word. Most powerful squares.

How Multipliers Stack

👑 Key Rule

Letters First, Then Words

Step 1: Apply DLS/TLS · Step 2: Sum all tiles · Step 3: Apply DWS/TWS

Example: QUIZ with Q on TLS, word hitting TWS. Q=10×3=30, U=1, I=1, Z=10. Sum=42. Then ×3 for TWS = 126 points from one 4-letter word.

Triple-Triple = ×9: A word spanning two TWS squares gets multiplied by 9. These are the legendary 200+ point plays in tournaments.

DWS + DWS = ×4: A word covering two DWS squares gets quadrupled. Less dramatic but much more common — look for diagonal DWS pairs.

TLS + TWS is devastating: High-value tile on TLS while the word hits TWS. Z on TLS in a TWS word = tile tripled then word tripled = massive points.

💡 Key Insight

Premium squares only apply when you first place a tile on them. Once covered, they're dead for future words. Don't waste a TWS on a 5-point word if you can hold it for a 15-point word next turn.
