πŸ‘‘ Premier Event

WORLD SCRABBLE CHAMPIONSHIP

Q4 2026 Β· 100+ players Β· 30+ countries Β· $50,000+ prize pool

Organized by WESPA (World English-Language Scrabble Players Association), the WSC is a 5-day event with 30+ rounds of competitive play. Entry is by national qualification β€” you must earn a spot through your country's selection process. The reigning champion defends their title against the world's best.

WESPA Youth Championship: For players under 18. Same format as the adult WSC but with age-appropriate scheduling. Held alongside or near the main event. Growing rapidly in participation.

WESPA Grand Prix: A series of rated tournaments throughout the year that contribute to world rankings. Points accumulate across multiple events in different countries.

North American Events

North America has the most active competitive Scrabble scene, with events nearly every weekend somewhere on the continent. NASPA (North American Scrabble Players Association) oversees ratings and tournament sanctioning.

NASPA National Championship (Jul–Aug): The biggest North American event with 400+ players across multiple divisions. Held in a different US city each year. Entry fee $150–$200. Open to all rated NASPA members.

Can-Am Tournament (Spring): Popular cross-border event between US and Canadian players. Typically held in cities near the border. 100+ players, friendly atmosphere, great for first-timers.

Regional Opens (Monthly): Every major US city has monthly rated events. Check the NASPA tournament calendar for events near you. Entry fees $25–$50. Usually 1-day events with 6–8 rounds.

πŸ’‘ Getting Started

To play in NASPA-rated events, join at naspa.org ($50/year membership). Your first tournament assigns you a provisional rating based on your performance. Most newcomers start around 800–1000 rating.

UK & European Events

The UK has a deeply established competitive Scrabble culture, with the Association of British Scrabble Players (ABSP) running a year-round circuit. European events use the SOWPODS/Collins dictionary.

British National Championship (Sep–Oct): The premier UK event with 150+ players. Held over a long weekend. Open to all ABSP members. Entry fee Β£30–£50.

European Championship (varies): Rotates between European cities. Attracts players from 20+ European nations. Usually held in spring or early summer.

UK Open Circuit (Monthly): Regular rated tournaments across England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Most are one-day events with Β£10–£20 entry. Check absp.org.uk for the full calendar.

How to Register & What to Expect

Entering your first tournament can feel intimidating, but the Scrabble community is genuinely welcoming to newcomers. Here is the step-by-step process and what to expect on game day.

🧩 First Tournament Checklist

1

Join your national association (NASPA, ABSP, etc.) and get a membership number.

2

Find a local open tournament on the association calendar β€” look for events marked "all welcome" or "unrated players accepted."

3

Register online and pay the entry fee. Most events fill weeks in advance β€” do not wait until the last day.

4

Bring: a chess clock (or borrow one), pen, score sheets (usually provided), water bottle, and snacks. Arrive 30 min early.

5

Play your games, track your score, and enjoy the experience. Focus on learning, not winning your first time.

πŸ’‘ Pro Tip

Most tournaments have multiple divisions based on rating. As a new player, you will be placed in the lowest division where you will face opponents near your skill level β€” not the national champions.
