Why J Rarely Ends English Words
🔤 Latin & Germanic roots
English inherited spelling from Latin and Germanic, where J didn't exist as a final letter. The /dʒ/ sound gets spelled -dge or -ge instead (edge, judge).
🌍 All are loanwords
Every J-ending Scrabble word comes from Arabic (haj, hajj), Hindi (raj), or Persian (taj). These languages commonly end words with the /dʒ/ sound spelled as J.
Strategy for J-Ending Plays
J-dump priority: J is worth 8 points but extremely hard to use in longer words. HAJ (13pts) is your best quick dump — 3 tiles, 13 points, done. Don't hold J hoping for better when HAJ is available.
Premium square targeting: J on DLS = 16 points from one tile. HAJ with J on DLS scores 21 total. Since J-ending words are short, you have flexibility to position J precisely on bonus squares.
Surprise factor: Most players don't know J-ending words exist. Playing TAJ or RAJ often draws challenges — and when opponents are wrong, you keep the points plus their turn. Psychological edge.
✓ Better: Use J early
J is hard to use in bingos. Play HAJ/RAJ/TAJ quickly to free your rack for longer plays. 10-13 points for dumping J is excellent value.
✗ Worse: Holding J too long
J blocks bingo potential and has limited combinations. Holding it for 3+ turns hoping for bigger play usually costs you more in lost rack flexibility.
