Strategy for Clock Words
QUARTZ is the holy grail: If you ever hold Q, U, and Z simultaneously, play QUARTZ immediately. The 24-point base is exceptional, and on a double or triple word square, it becomes game-defining — 48 or 72 points.
EPOCH stacks three premium consonants: P=3, C=3, and H=4 deliver 10 of the 12 points. EPOCH is your go-to word when these three tiles appear together — better than playing them separately across multiple turns.
TEMPO uses M+P together: M=3 and P=3 give you 6 points from 2 tiles. TEMPO is a clean 5-letter deploy for both — and hooks easily with S (TEMPOS) or I (TEMPI) for musical plural forms.
💡 Key Insight
Clock words house the two rarest tiles in one word. QUARTZ is the only common English word that uses both Q=10 and Z=10 together. Memorise this — it's the single highest-scoring natural word you can play without a bingo bonus.
