SOWPODS Dictionary: The International Scrabble Word List

8 min read Word Finder

SOWPODS is the broadest official Scrabble dictionary in the world. With over 280,000 valid words, it's the list used in international tournaments across the UK, Australia, Africa, Asia, and everywhere outside North America. If you've ever wondered why some words work in one country but not another, SOWPODS is the reason — and understanding it gives you a massive strategic advantage.

History of SOWPODS

The SOWPODS dictionary was born from a desire to unify international Scrabble play. Before the 1980s, British and North American players used completely different word lists, making cross-Atlantic competition chaotic.

🧩 How SOWPODS Was Created

1

British players used the Official Scrabble Words (OSW) list, based on Chambers Dictionary entries.

2

North American players used the Official Tournament and Club Word List (OWL/TWL), maintained independently.

3

In the late 1980s, the international Scrabble community merged both lists into one comprehensive dictionary — SOWPODS.

4

The name is a blend of SOW (from OSW reversed) and PODS (from the Pocket Oxford Dictionary Supplement).

Today, SOWPODS is officially published as "Collins Scrabble Words" (CSW) by HarperCollins, with updated editions released every few years to add new words. The name "SOWPODS" persists in player communities as the informal shorthand.

SOWPODS includes words from 2 to 15 letters — the maximum that fits on a Scrabble board. The list draws from multiple English dialects: British, American, Australian, South African, Indian, and other world Englishes. This breadth is what gives it such a larger word count compared to the North American TWL.

💡 Why It Matters

With 90,000 more words than TWL, SOWPODS players have access to more two-letter words, more obscure stems, and more bingo possibilities. Words like ZO, CH, GI, and many others that TWL rejects are perfectly valid in SOWPODS tournaments.

Where SOWPODS Is Used

SOWPODS is the de facto Scrabble dictionary for the entire world outside North America. It's used in competitive tournaments, club play, and online platforms that cater to international players.

🌍 SOWPODS Regions

United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Malaysia, Singapore, Pakistan, and all WESPA-affiliated countries.

🏆 Tournament Bodies

WESPA (World English-Language Scrabble Players Association) mandates SOWPODS/CSW for all international championships and endorsed events.

The World Scrabble Championship, held biennially, uses SOWPODS. National championships in the UK, Australia, and most other countries also use it. Only NASPA-governed events (US, Canada, Thailand) use TWL instead.

Key Differences From TWL

Since TWL is a strict subset of SOWPODS, every TWL word is valid in SOWPODS — but not the reverse. The extra 90,000+ words in SOWPODS come from British English, archaic terms, regional dialects, and words from non-American English sources.

Words Valid in SOWPODS but Not TWL

Knowing these SOWPODS-exclusive words is essential for international tournament preparation. Many are short, high-frequency words that open up board positions unavailable to TWL-only players.
