In Scrabble, a triple-triple is the holy grail of scoring. When your word spans two Triple Word Score squares in a single play, the multipliers stack: 3 × 3 = 9. A modest 20-point word becomes 180 points. Add the 50-point bingo bonus and you're looking at 230+ points from a single turn.
How the 9x Multiplier Works
The Scrabble rules are clear: when a word covers multiple premium squares, word multipliers are applied sequentially. Two TWS squares means the word value is tripled, then tripled again.

Base word value × 3 (first TWS) × 3 (second TWS) + 50 (bingo bonus if all 7 tiles used) = Final score
Example: RETAILS (base 7) × 9 = 63 + 50 bingo = 113 points
Any Double Letter Score (DLS) or Triple Letter Score (TLS) squares the word passes through are calculated first, before word multipliers apply. A high-value tile on a TLS within a triple-triple produces astronomical scores.
Where Triple-Triples Are Possible
The standard 15×15 board has 8 TWS squares. Triple-triples can only occur on specific lines where two TWS squares sit exactly 7 or 8 tiles apart:

Pro Tip: The most achievable triple-triples use 8-letter words on edge rows/columns. You only need 7 tiles from your rack plus one tile already on the board (a hook) to bridge the gap between TWS squares.

Open a TWS lane — Play a word that leaves one TWS accessible on row 1, 8, or 15 with room for an 8-letter extension
Plant a hook letter — Place a common hook (S, E, D, R) in the path between two TWS squares
Sacrifice for position — A 15-point play that opens a triple-triple lane beats a 30-point play that closes the board
Hold bingo-prone tiles — Keep SATIRE or RETAIN stems when you see a triple-triple lane developing
Block opponent access — If they're clearly setting up a lane, place a tile that interrupts the path
Defensive Awareness — Blocking Triple-Triples
Equally important as playing triple-triples is preventing your opponent from landing them. Watch for these warning signs:
If your opponent plays a short word touching row 1 or 15 and leaves both TWS squares open, they may be setting a trap. Place a blocker tile between the TWS squares — even a 2-letter word perpendicular to the line closes the lane. In tournament play, experienced players regularly sacrifice 10-20 points to block a potential triple-triple rather than risk a 200+ point swing.
