The J tile is medium-high value (8 points) with limited short-word options. Speed and premium squares are everything with J.
Play fast: J has fewer options than Z or X. The longer you hold it, the more turns you waste with reduced rack flexibility. Play it within 1-2 turns — even a plain JO for 9 points is better than holding J for 4 turns.
Target premium squares always: J on a Triple Letter square = 24 points just for the J. JO with J on TL = 25 points. JAW with J on TL = 37 points. Never play J on a plain square if a premium is accessible within one turn.
