Two-Letter Words with K in Scrabble
The K tile sits in a sweet spot β worth 5 points with only one copy in the bag, it rewards players who know where to place it. The good news? There are exactly two valid 2-letter words containing K: KA and KI. Both score 6 points and can be played in almost any tight spot. Master these two words and you will never waste a turn trying to offload your K.
KA
6 points Β· K(5) + A(1) Β· TWL + SOWPODS

KI
6 points Β· K(5) + I(1) Β· TWL + SOWPODS
The Japanese term for life energy or spirit (related to Chinese qi/chi). Perfect for tight board positions where only an I is available adjacent to your K placement.

Why KA and KI Matter
With only one K tile in the entire bag and no other 2-letter K words available, KA and KI are your only options for a quick 2-letter K play. This makes them critical for several situations.
π‘ Key Insight
KA and KI are parallel play enablers. You can lay K next to an existing word, forming KA or KI downward while simultaneously scoring for the horizontal word your K extends. This turns a 6-point word into a 15β25 point combination play.
β When to Play KA/KI
Tight boards with no room for longer words. Parallel plays that score in two directions. When you need to dump K quickly before endgame. Premium square access for the K tile.
β When to Hold K
When you have letters for KAYAK, KIOSK, or other high-value K words. When a Triple Letter square is about to open up. When your rack has K + blank for a bingo opportunity.
Expanding to 3β4 Letter K Words
Once you have KA and KI memorized, expand your arsenal with short K words that build on these foundations. Many 3β4 letter K words can be formed by hooking onto existing plays.
3-Letter K Words
KAB (9pts) Β· KAE (7pts) Β· KAF (10pts) Β· KAS (7pts) Β· KAT (7pts) Β· KAY (10pts) Β· KEN (7pts) Β· KEX (14pts) Β· KEY (10pts) Β· KID (8pts) Β· KIN (7pts) Β· KIT (7pts) Β· KOI (7pts)
High-Value 4-Letter K Words
KAYO (11pts) Β· KELP (10pts) Β· KALE (8pts) Β· KINK (12pts) Β· KICK (14pts) Β· KIWI (11pts) Β· KNOB (10pts) Β· KNEW (11pts) Β· many build from 3-letter stems
π‘ Hooking Tip
KA hooks to KAB, KAE, KAF, KAS, KAT, KAY β if KA is already on the board, you can extend it by adding a single letter. Similarly, KI hooks to KID, KIN, KIS, KIT. Watch for these free points.
K Tile Strategy
The K tile is worth 5 points β tied with J and shared only with F, H, V, W, and Y in that tier. But unlike those letters, there is only ONE K in the entire 100-tile bag. This scarcity makes K both predictable and powerful when placed on premium squares.
Target Triple Letter squares: K on a TL square is worth 15 points for just that one tile. Combined with the rest of your word, a well-placed K can turn a mediocre play into a 30+ point turn.
Do not hold K too long: With only 1 in the bag, your opponent can track when K has been drawn. If they see you holding tiles, they will block K-friendly spots. Play it within 2β3 turns.
Use KA/KI as insurance: Even if no great K play exists, KA or KI guarantees you can offload K for 6 points minimum. On a DL square, that jumps to 11β16 points β perfectly respectable for a 2-letter play.
Pair K with high-frequency letters: Words like KEN, KIN, KIT use common letters you are likely to have. Build your rack awareness around what pairs well with K β vowels and N, T, S, E are ideal companions.
