Two-Letter Words with V in Scrabble
Bad news first: there are no valid 2-letter words containing V in the TWL dictionary. Zero. This makes V one of the hardest tiles in Scrabble β worth only 4 points but lacking the quick-play flexibility that Z, X, and even Q have with their 2-letter options. The good news? With the right 3-letter V words memorized and smart premium square targeting, V does not have to be a liability.

V is unique among high-value consonants: Z has ZA, X has AX/EX/OX/XI/XU, Q has QI, J has JO β but V has nothing at 2 letters. This means you cannot dump V quickly in a tight spot, making it one of the most frustrating tiles to draw late in a game.

Why V Has No 2-Letter Words
English simply does not have common 2-letter combinations starting or ending with V that have been accepted into the Scrabble dictionaries. Compare this to other high-value tiles:
β Tiles with 2-Letter Words
Z β ZA (11pts) Β· X β AX, EX, OX, XI, XU Β· Q β QI (11pts) Β· J β JO (9pts) Β· K β KA (6pts)
β No 2-Letter Words
V β nothing Β· C β nothing (but C is only 3pts, low risk)
π‘ Key Insight
V is worth only 4 points β the same as F, H, W, and Y β but those letters all have 2-letter words. V is uniquely penalized by having medium value with minimum flexibility. This makes it the least efficient tile in the game (points vs. playability ratio).
Essential 3-Letter V Words
Since you cannot play V in a 2-letter word, memorize these 3-letter options. They are your minimum-length plays and the fastest way to use V.

Words ending in -IVE are among the easiest V plays: FIVE, GIVE, HIVE, JIVE, LIVE, DIVE. They use common letters and the V sits in a predictable position. Learn the -IVE family and you will always have a V option.
V Tile Strategy
V is widely considered one of the worst tiles in Scrabble relative to its value. Here is how competitive players handle it.
Play it immediately: Do not hold V waiting for a big word. With no 2-letter option, every turn V sits on your rack is a turn you lose flexibility. Play VIA, VET, or VOW the first chance you get β even for 6-9 points.
Consider exchanging: V is one of the few tiles where exchanging is actively correct in some situations. If you have VV (both V tiles), or V + other clunky consonants (C, W, V), exchange rather than suffer for multiple turns.
Use -IVE and -AVE endings: Hook onto existing words. If someone plays DIVE, you can extend to DIVER or DIVES. If there is a HAVE on the board, extend to HAVEN. V works best extending existing words rather than starting new ones.
VEX is your premium play: VEX (13pts) is the highest-scoring 3-letter V word and uses the uncommon X tile. If you have both V and X, VEX dumps both problem tiles at once for a solid score.
β Good V Management
Draw V β play VIA or VOW next turn for 6-9 pts. Or extend an existing word with -IVE/-AVE ending. Keep rack flowing.
β Poor V Management
Hold V for 4+ turns waiting for VIVID or VALVE. Meanwhile your rack is clogged and you miss better plays with other tiles.
V in the Endgame
Getting stuck with V at game end is more common than getting stuck with Z or X because V lacks quick-dump options. Plan ahead.
β οΈ Endgame Warning
An unplayed V costs you 4 points and gives your opponent 4 points β an 8-point total swing. While smaller than Q (20-point swing) or Z (20-point swing), it happens far more often because V is so hard to play in tight late-game boards.
𧩠Late-Game V Options
Look for any open E β play AVE or EVE
Look for any open I + A β play VIA
Hook onto existing words ending in E β add V to make -VE (GAVE, DOVE, etc.)
If no play possible β accept the 4-point loss (it is unavoidable sometimes)
