Weekend Intensive Study Plans

9 min read Word Finder

Weekday practice builds habits. Weekend intensives build breakthroughs. A dedicated 3-4 hour Saturday or Sunday session lets you tackle complex skills that need extended focus — tournament simulation, deep vocabulary categories, and multi-game analysis that short sessions can't accommodate. Here are complete session plans for every skill level, ready to follow step by step.

Plan A: Tournament Simulation (3.5 hours)

This replicates the rhythm and pressure of a tournament day. You'll play multiple games under clock pressure with minimal breaks — building the endurance and focus that decides tournaments.

🧩 Tournament Sim Schedule

1

0:00-0:15 — Warm-up: 5 anagram blitzes (2 min each). Get your brain into word-finding mode. No pressure — just warming up the pattern recognition engine.

2

0:15-0:45 — Game 1: Full game, 25-minute clock, scoresheet, tile tracking. Play against strongest available opponent (online or bot). Focus: apply one specific skill you've been practising.

3

0:45-0:50 — Break: 5 minutes. Walk, stretch, hydrate. Do NOT look at the game or results. Mental reset.

4

0:50-1:20 — Game 2: Same format. This tests mental stamina — can you maintain concentration after a win OR loss in game 1?

5

1:20-1:50 — Game 3: Optional third game. Most tournaments are 6-8 rounds — this tests third-round fatigue. Note any concentration drops.

6

1:50-2:00 — Extended break: 10 minutes. Eat something. This mirrors the lunch break in a real tournament.

7

2:00-3:00 — Deep analysis: Analyse all 2-3 games. Find your biggest equity losses. Categorise errors: word gaps, strategy gaps, time pressure mistakes, or fatigue errors.

8

3:00-3:30 — Targeted drilling: Study the specific words and concepts that cost you points. Create flashcards for next week's daily practice.

Plan B: Vocabulary Blitz (3 hours)

When you want to rapidly expand word knowledge. This session can add 50-80 new words to your working vocabulary in a single sitting — a week's worth of daily study compressed into one focused effort.

📖 Block 1 (45 min)

New word category study. Pick one list (Q-no-U, 3-letter words, a specific stem family). Learn 30 words with active recall — read, cover, recall, check.

🔄 Block 2 (45 min)

Anagram practice with new words. Scramble each new word, then unscramble. Mix with previously known words. Speed matters — train recognition, not just knowledge.

🎮 Block 3 (45 min)

Play a game specifically trying to use new words. Even if suboptimal, playing a newly learned word cements it far better than flashcards alone.

📝 Block 4 (45 min)

Final review and hook mapping. For every new word, identify at least one front hook and one back hook. Create next week's review deck.

💡 The 48-Hour Rule

Words learned in an intensive session must be reviewed within 48 hours or retention drops below 30%. Schedule a 15-minute review session on Monday morning to lock in your weekend vocabulary gains.

Plan C: The Strategy Workshop (3 hours)

For players whose vocabulary is strong but who want to sharpen decision-making. This session is entirely about positional play, leave valuation, and game-state awareness.

Hour 1 — Leave puzzles (20 positions): Given a rack and board, you're presented with 3 valid plays. Rank them by equity considering both immediate score AND leave quality. Check against solver after all 20.

Hour 2 — Board control scenarios: Study 10 mid-game positions where opening/closing the board is the key decision. Practice articulating WHY you'd open or close — score differential, tile distribution, and opponent's likely holdings.

Hour 3 — Endgame mastery: Solve 15 endgame positions of increasing difficulty. Start with simple (2 tiles each) and progress to complex (5-6 tiles each with multiple viable sequences).

Managing Energy & Focus

Long sessions fail when you ignore your brain's need for recovery. Follow these principles to maintain quality throughout the 3-4 hours.

✓ Do

Take 10-minute breaks every 45-50 minutes, hydrate constantly, eat a light snack at the halfway point, alternate active (games) with passive (study) blocks

✗ Don't

Power through without breaks, eat heavy meals that cause energy crashes, check phone during breaks (screen fatigue compounds), study after you notice concentration dropping

Monthly Intensive Calendar

Alternate session types each weekend for balanced development across all skill areas.
