Words Ending in J: Complete Scrabble List
Words ending in J are some of the rarest in the English language — and that makes them incredibly valuable in Scrabble. Most players never think to check for J-ending words, so knowing HAJ, TAJ, and RAJ gives you hook plays that opponents will not see coming. This guide covers every valid J-ending word, their scores, and exactly how to use them as hooks for maximum impact.
J-Ending Words
Only ~6 valid words · High surprise value · Perfect for hooks
English rarely ends words in J — almost all come from Arabic or Hindi loanwords (hajj, raj, taj). In Scrabble, this scarcity is your advantage: opponents do not expect J at the end of a word, so they leave positions open that you can exploit with hook plays.

Strategy: Using J-Ending Words as Hooks
The real power of J-ending words is as hooks — adding J to existing words on the board.
Hook onto HA: If someone plays HA, add J to form HAJ. Score HAJ plus whatever word J creates perpendicular. Opponents rarely defend against this.
Hook onto TA: TA is played frequently. Adding J forms TAJ — a surprising hook that many players do not know is valid.
Hook onto RA: RA is common. Adding J forms RAJ. Score both the hook word and the perpendicular formation.
Premium square targeting: If J lands on a Triple Letter via a hook, you score 24 points for J alone, plus base word, plus perpendicular word. A single J hook on TL can net 30-40 points.
🧩 Hook Play Example
Opponent plays HA horizontally on the board
Square after A is a Triple Letter square
Place J on TL forming HAJ (H=4, A=1, J=24) = 29 points
J also forms JO vertically = additional 9+ points. Total: 38+
✓ Why J-Ending Words Work
Opponents never defend against J at end of words. HA, TA, RA are played constantly — free hook opportunities.
✗ When They Fail
If the square after HA/TA/RA is blocked or no premium is accessible. Play JO or a J-start word instead.
