Words Ending in Q: All Valid Scrabble Words
Words ending in Q are the rarest word pattern in Scrabble. While most players know Q-without-U words like QI and QAT, very few realize that words can actually END in Q. The list is extraordinarily short — just SUQ and TRANQ in the TWL dictionary — but knowing them can rescue you from a Q-stuck endgame disaster.
SUQ
12 points · S(1) + U(1) + Q(10) · TWL + SOWPODS · Q-ending word
An open-air marketplace in Arabic-speaking countries (variant spelling of souk). SUQ is the shortest and most accessible Q-ending word in Scrabble. It uses only common tiles (S and U), making it playable even in tight endgame situations where QI is not an option.

Complete List: TWL Dictionary
In the TWL (Tournament Word List, used in North America), exactly two words end in the letter Q. Both are valid plays in any sanctioned tournament.
✓ SUQ (12 points)
An open-air marketplace in Arabic countries. Also spelled souk or souq. 3 letters: S(1) + U(1) + Q(10). Plural: SUQS (13pts). The most accessible Q-ending word.
✓ TRANQ (14 points)
Informal for tranquilizer. 5 letters: T(1) + R(1) + A(1) + N(1) + Q(10). Plural: TRANQS (15pts). All companion letters are high-frequency, making it reliably playable.
SOWPODS Extras
The SOWPODS dictionary (used internationally) includes a few additional Q-ending words not found in TWL. These are primarily borrowed from Arabic and other languages.
SOWPODS-Only Q-Ending Words
TALAQ (14pts) — Islamic divorce declaration · TRANQ is also in SOWPODS · QOPH variants may appear in some editions. Always verify with your tournament director which words are accepted in your region.
💡 Dictionary Warning
Q-ending words are frequently disputed in casual play. Many opponents will challenge SUQ or TRANQ because they seem implausible. Know your rights — both are officially valid in TWL. If playing with SOWPODS, confirm TALAQ acceptance with your group before relying on it.
Q Endgame Strategy
The real value of Q-ending words is endgame survival. If you draw Q late with no I on the board for QI, these words become your lifeline.
SUQ as emergency exit: SUQ only needs S + U — two of the most common tiles in the game. If you have Q stuck on your rack and any S or U tile, you likely have a playable word. Look for any opening where S-U-Q fits in sequence.
TRANQ uses common letters: T, R, A, and N are all high-frequency tiles. If you have 5+ tiles remaining including Q, check if TRANQ is buildable. At 14 points, it is a respectable score for an emergency dump.
The -20 point swing: Getting stuck with Q at game end costs you 10 points (subtracted from your score) AND gives your opponent 10 points. That is a 20-point swing. Even a low-scoring SUQ play (12 pts) beats holding Q by 32 points net.
Priority order for Q plays: QI (11pts, easiest) → QADI/QAID (14pts, needs A+D/I) → QAT (12pts, needs A+T) → SUQ (12pts, Q-ending) → TRANQ (14pts, Q-ending) → Exchange (if 7+ tiles in bag).
🧩 Q-Stuck Decision Tree
Can you play QI? (Is there an I on the board with an open adjacent square?) → Play QI
Can you play QAT, QADI, or other Q-start words? → Play the highest-scoring option
Do you have S + U? → Play SUQ (12 points, ends in Q)
Do you have T + R + A + N? → Play TRANQ (14 points)
Are there 7+ tiles in the bag? → Exchange Q and hope for better draws
