While SOWPODS is the larger dictionary, TWL does contain a small number of words that aren't accepted in international play. Understanding these TWL-exclusive entries matters if you switch between tournament contexts or play on platforms that use different word lists.

What Is the Tournament Word List?

TWL — sometimes called TWL06, OWL, or simply "the tournament list" — is maintained by NASPA (North American Scrabble Players Association). It's the only dictionary permitted in sanctioned tournaments across the United States and Canada. The current edition (TWL06) draws from Merriam-Webster's Official Scrabble Players Dictionary and undergoes periodic updates.

How TWL Differs from SOWPODS

The most common misconception is that SOWPODS simply contains everything in TWL plus extras. In reality, a small set of words exists only in TWL — words that NASPA accepted but Collins lexicographers excluded from their international list.

These TWL-only words typically fall into categories: recent American slang adopted by Merriam-Webster but not yet by Collins, proper nouns that TWL reclassified as common words, and technical terms from American industry or culture.
