Words 8+ letters long are almost always played as extensions of existing words on the board. You rarely have all 8 tiles — instead, you play TRANS in front of a word already there (like ACT → TRANSACT or FIX → TRANSFIX).
Strategy: Using Long Prefix Words
Long prefix words like TRANS- plays require a different strategic approach than standard rack plays. Here is how tournament players set up and execute these high-value moves.
Look for extension hooks: Scan the board for existing words that TRANS can prefix. ACT, FIX, IT, FER, POSE, PORT, SHIP, FORM — all become valid plays with TRANS in front. You only need 5 tiles from your rack to add TRANS to a 3+ letter word.
Target Triple Word squares: TRANS words are 7+ letters, which means they can easily span from one side of the board to a Triple Word square. A 7-letter word hitting TW scores triple plus the 50-point bingo bonus — often 100+ points in a single turn.
Hold common letters: If you have T, R, A, N, S on your rack (5 of the most common tiles), keep them together when possible. Drawing any one of dozens of extension letters (I, E, F, P, etc.) completes a bingo-length word.
Use blanks wisely: If you hold T-R-A-N-? (blank), the blank becomes S and gives you TRANS + whatever suffix is available on the board. A blank in a TRANS play is almost always worth 50+ points total.

TRANSFIX starting on row 1 or 15, spanning to a TW square. Base 18 pts × 3 = 54. Or TRANSIT as a bingo across DW = 7×2 + 50 = 64 points.
✗ Missed Opportunity
Playing TRANSIT on plain squares for 7 + 50 = 57 points when sliding it one square left would hit DW for 14 + 50 = 64. Always check adjacent positions.
⚠️ Dictionary Note
Always verify which dictionary your game uses. TRANS as a standalone word is only valid in SOWPODS (international). In TWL (North American), you must have at least TRANCE, TRANQ, or another full word — TRANS alone will be challenged off.
