Vowel-Heavy Words for Rack Dumps
When you can't play a pure-vowel word, these vowel-heavy words use 3-5 vowels with just 1-2 consonants — perfect for rebalancing your rack:
ADIEU is the single best vowel-dump word — it uses 4 of your 5 vowels in one play and scores 6 points. If you draw AEIOU with two consonants, ADIEU should be your first thought.
Strategies for Excess Vowels
The Scrabble tile bag contains 42 vowels out of 100 total tiles. Drawing 5+ vowels happens more often than you'd expect. Here's how to handle it:
Play, don't exchange: Exchanging tiles loses your entire turn. Even a low-scoring vowel dump (5-8 points) is usually better than giving your opponent a free turn while you swap.
Memorise 2-letter vowel pairs: AA, AI, OE — these let you play parallel to existing words, scoring points from multiple crossings even with just 2-3 points base value.
Target premium squares: Even a 2-point vowel word scores 4-6 when placed on a double letter/word square. AA on a double word is 4 points plus it opens a hook spot.
Think hooks: Many vowel words can be hooked later — AAL, AAH, AIS, OES. By playing the short word now, you create scoring opportunities for future turns.

When to Exchange vs. When to Dump
Not every vowel-heavy rack should be played. Here's a decision framework:
✓ Play (Dump Vowels)
You can score 8+ points. You have ADIEU, AUDIO, or similar available. A premium square is reachable. Playing creates a hook for your next turn. Fewer than 7 tiles remain in the bag.
✗ Exchange Instead
Best available play scores under 5 points. No vowel-dump words fit the board. Exchanging 4-5 tiles gives you a fresh start. Many tiles remain in bag (early game). Opponent has a tight lead you need a bingo to overcome.
⚠️ End-Game Rule
In the endgame (fewer than 7 tiles in the bag), never exchange. You must play or pass. This is when memorised vowel-only words become absolutely critical — AA, AI, and OE can save you from being stuck.
