The Nigel Richards Era

👑 GOAT

NIGEL RICHARDS

5× World Champion (2007, 2011, 2013, 2018, 2019)

Widely regarded as the greatest Scrabble player in history. Richards also won the French-language World Championship in 2015 despite not speaking French — memorizing the entire French Scrabble dictionary instead.

Richards' dominance reshaped competitive Scrabble. No other player has won the WSC more than once. His five titles span 12 years (2007–2019), and his ability to compete at the highest level across multiple dictionaries (English and French) is unprecedented in word game history.

Tournament Format

Qualification: Players qualify through national rankings, regional championships, or WESPA rating thresholds. Typically 100–150 players compete.

Swiss rounds: 24+ rounds of Swiss-system play over 4–5 days. Top 8 or top 2 advance to finals depending on the year.

Finals: A best-of-five or best-of-seven match between the top qualifiers to determine the champion.

Dictionary: Collins Scrabble Words (SOWPODS) — the international English-language Scrabble dictionary maintained by Collins.
