Is ZA a Scrabble Word? (And Other Z Words to Know)
The Z tile is worth 10 points β the same as Q β but far easier to play. Unlike Q, which depends on finding a U or knowing obscure Q-no-U words, the Z pairs naturally with common vowels. The key? Knowing which short Z words are valid. ZA is your best friend here, and there are dozens more Z words that can turn a single tile into a game-winning play.
ZA
11 points Β· Second-highest scoring 2-letter word Β· Valid in TWL + SOWPODS
ZA is informal for pizza and is one of the most powerful short words in Scrabble. With just a Z and any A on the board, you score 11 points minimum β and on premium squares, ZA can deliver 22 to 33 points in a single 2-letter play. It is the easiest way to deploy your Z tile quickly and efficiently.

Z Tile Strategy
The Z tile is arguably the best high-value tile in Scrabble. Unlike Q (which needs specific letters), Z works with almost any vowel. Here is how to maximize it.
Target Triple Letter squares: Z on a Triple Letter square is worth 30 points for that tile alone. Even a simple ZA with Z on TL scores 31 points. Always scan for TL access before playing Z elsewhere.
Use parallel plays: Place Z to form words in both directions. For example, playing ZA parallel to an existing word can score ZA plus a second word formed vertically β doubling your points from one tile.
Do not hold Z too long: Unlike Q, Z rarely gets stuck. But holding it for 3+ turns hoping for a bingo is usually wrong. Play it for 20-30 points now rather than risk never finding the perfect spot.
ZA as a hook: ZA pluralizes to ZAS. You can also hook Z onto existing words β AZO from an existing A, or ADZ from AD. Hooks maximize scoring by forming multiple words.
β Z vs Q: Easier to Play
Z works with A, I, O, E β all common vowels. You almost always have a play available within 1-2 turns of drawing Z.
β Common Mistake
Saving Z for a 7-letter bingo. Z-bingos are rare and not worth the rack space sacrifice. Play it for 20-30 pts and move on.
