Common Foreign-Origin Scrabble Words — Borrowed Words That Score Big
English is a borrowing language — it absorbs words from every culture it contacts. Many of these borrowed words are valid in Scrabble and use letter patterns that native English words avoid. QI (Chinese), ZA (Italian slang), TOFU (Japanese), KARMA (Sanskrit) — these foreign-origin words give you plays that opponents often challenge incorrectly, thinking they're not real.

The Challenge Factor
💡 Key Insight
Foreign-origin words are challenge magnets. Opponents unfamiliar with QI, ZA, or KVETCH will challenge them — and lose their turn when the word is confirmed valid. This gives you a double advantage: you score points AND your opponent wastes a turn.
Strategy Tips for Foreign-Origin Words
QI is essential: The single most important foreign word in Scrabble. At 11 points for 2 letters, it's your Q-without-U lifeline. Play it every time you draw Q without U — no hesitation.
ZA for tight spots: ZA (11 pts, 2 letters) is the Z equivalent of QI. When the board is crowded and you can't fit ZONE or ZERO, ZA fits anywhere and delivers 11 points minimum.
KIBBUTZ for massive scores: At 24 points base (before premium squares), KIBBUTZ is one of the highest-scoring 7-letter words. If you draw K-I-B-B-U-T-Z, play it immediately — the bingo bonus takes it to 74+ points.
Use confidence against challenges: Play foreign-origin words confidently. If your opponent sees hesitation, they'll challenge. Play QI, ZA, or TOFU with the same certainty as THE or CAT — because they're equally valid.
