Extending Words You Already Know
You don't need to memorize thousands of new words to expand your Scrabble vocabulary. The fastest path is extending words you already know. Add RE- to the front of PLAY and you have REPLAY. Add -ING to TRAIN and you have TRAINING. This simple principle, applied systematically, can double your effective word count in weeks.
The Power Prefixes
These prefixes extend the most words and use the most common tiles. Learn them in this priority order.
RE-
400+ valid extensions • Uses only R(1pt) + E(1pt) = 2 points for access
RESTATE, RETHINK, REBUILD, RETRAIN, RESCORE, REPLACE, RESHAPE... The most versatile prefix in English. If a verb describes an action, RE- usually works.
UN- (300+ words)
UNTRIED, UNSAFE, UNLIKE, UNWISE, UNLOCK. Negates adjectives and reverses verbs. U(1pt) + N(1pt) = 2pts.
OUT- (200+ words)
OUTSCORE, OUTPLAY, OUTRUN, OUTWIT, OUTLAST. Means "to exceed." O(1pt) + U(1pt) + T(1pt) = 3pts.
OVER- (150+ words)
OVERPLAY, OVERSEE, OVERRUN, OVERTAKE. Means "too much" or "above." 4 common tiles = 5pts.
MIS- (100+ words)
MISPLACE, MISFIRE, MISLEAD, MISJUDGE. Means "wrongly." M(3pt) + I(1pt) + S(1pt) = 5pts.
The Power Suffixes
Suffixes let you build off the back of words already on the board — your opponent plays TRAIN, and you extend it to TRAINING or TRAINED on your turn.
-ING
Most versatile
-ED
Past tense
-ER
Comparative/doer
-LY
Adverb maker
-NESS
Noun maker
✓ -ING adds 3 tiles, creates gerunds
PLAY→PLAYING, SCORE→SCORING, BUILD→BUILDING. Nearly any verb accepts -ING. Uses I(1)+N(1)+G(2) = 4pts of tiles.
✓ -ED adds 2 tiles, creates past tense
PLAY→PLAYED, SCORE→SCORED, TRAIN→TRAINED. Most verbs accept -ED. Uses E(1)+D(2) = 3pts of tiles.
✓ -ER adds 2 tiles, creates agents or comparatives
PLAY→PLAYER, FAST→FASTER, TRAIN→TRAINER. Uses E(1)+R(1) = 2pts. Often extends to -ERS for plural.
Stacking Extensions
The real power comes from combining prefixes and suffixes on the same base word. A 4-letter word can become an 8-letter bingo.
🧩 Extension Chains
PLAY → RE+PLAY → REPLAY+ED → REPLAYED (8 letters)
TRAIN → UN+TRAIN → UNTRAIN+ED → UNTRAINED (9 letters)
STATE → RE+STATE → RESTATE+MENT → RESTATEMENT (11 letters)
SCORE → OUT+SCORE → OUTSCORE+D → OUTSCORED (9 letters)

Common Extension Traps
Not every word takes every extension. These common traps catch even experienced players.
✗ Invalid Extensions
GOODLY (not valid), BESTLY (not valid), WORSELY (not valid). Not all adjectives take -LY in Scrabble dictionaries.
✗ False RE- words
REFLY, REBE, REGO — many short words don't take RE-. Always verify. The trap is assuming all verbs accept it.
Weekly Practice Plan
Monday: Take 20 common 4-5 letter words. List all valid prefix extensions (RE-, UN-, OUT-, OVER-, MIS-).
Wednesday: Take the same 20 words. List all valid suffix extensions (-ED, -ING, -ER, -LY, -NESS).
Friday: Combine — which words accept both a prefix AND a suffix? These are your bingo candidates.
Sunday: Play practice games focusing on board extensions. Count how many times you extend an opponent's word.
