Scrabble Hook Words Guide — One Letter, Big Points

6 min read Word Finder

Hook words are one of Scrabble's most efficient scoring techniques. By adding a single letter to an existing word on the board, you score your new word AND re-score the extended word — all from one tile placement. Mastering S-hooks, front-hooks, and back-hooks can add 20-40 extra points per game.

The Three Hook Types

S-Hook (Back)

Add S to pluralize: RAIN→RAINS, WORD→WORDS, TILE→TILES. Works on ~90% of nouns and verbs. The safest and most common hook type.

Front-Hook

Add letter before: C+LOSE=CLOSE, S+CREAM=SCREAM, B+REACH=BREACH. Rarer but opponents rarely block the front of words.

Back-Hook (non-S)

Add non-S letter after: CHIN+A=CHINA, GRAPH+Y=GRAPHY. Extends words with suffixes: -ED, -ER, -LY, -Y, -D.

Hook Strategy Tips

Play perpendicular to existing words: When you hook, your new word runs perpendicular to the existing one. Position your play to hit premium squares with the new word while scoring the hook extension for free.

Save S tiles for hooks: Don't waste S on a basic plural. Hold it until you can hook an existing high-value word while simultaneously playing your own word through a premium square. One S tile, two scoring events.

Memorize surprise front-hooks: B+LOCK, C+LAMP, S+TALK, G+HOST, W+ITCH — these front-hooks catch opponents off-guard because players rarely think about what goes BEFORE a word on the board.

💡 Key Insight

The best hooks target words sitting near premium squares. If a word sits adjacent to a TWS, hooking it with S while running your new word through that TWS triples your word AND adds the hook. One tile, two scoring events.
