What Is Fishing?
Fishing means playing a low-scoring move (1-2 tiles) specifically to keep 5-6 tiles that form a strong bingo stem. You sacrifice immediate points gambling that your next draw completes a 7-letter word.

If your best play scores 28 and your fishing play scores 12, you sacrifice 16 points. If you bingo next turn for 75+ points (average bingo value), the gamble pays +59 net points when it works. Even at 30% success, the expected value often favours fishing.

Top Bingo Stems to Fish For
These 6-letter combinations produce the most 7-letter words. If your rack contains one of these stems plus a dumpable tile, fishing is almost always correct:

Fishing Technique: The One-Tile Dump
The cleanest fishing play uses exactly one tile, keeping six for maximum bingo probability next turn:
Hook an existing word: Add an S, D, or R to a word already on the board. Scores 5-15 points while dumping exactly one tile from your rack.
Play a 2-letter word: Simple moves like AX (9), ZA (11), or QI (11) dump one tile with decent points. Perfect when your other 6 tiles form a stem.
Dump the weakest tile: If your rack is SATIRE + V, play the V somewhere. V is the worst tile for bingo combinations. Keep the stem intact.
