Common Bingo Prefixes

Quiz · 2-letter words

7 min read

Prefixes are bingo shortcuts. When you spot RE, UN, or OUT on your rack, you're not searching through 25,000 possible 7-letter words — you're searching through the common 5-letter words those prefixes attach to. This drastically reduces your mental workload and speeds up bingo recognition.

The Big Five Bingo Prefixes

These five prefixes produce the most valid bingos in both SOWPODS and TWL. Memorise them as your primary bingo-finding toolkit.

How to Use Prefixes on Your Rack

The mental process is simple: spot the prefix, isolate it, then ask whether the remaining tiles form a word.

🧩 Prefix Bingo Process

1

Scan your rack for RE, UN, OUT, OVER, or MIS letter combinations.

2

Mentally set those tiles aside. Look at the remaining 4-5 tiles.

3

Can those remaining tiles anagram into a common word? STING, RATED, LACED, TRIED, DOING?

4

If yes → RESTRING, UNRATED, UNLACED, UNTRIED, UNDOING. Check if it's valid and fits the board.

💡 Pro Tip

Don't just check one prefix. Your rack UREINTS could be UN + RITES (UNRITES? No) or RE + UNITS (REUNITS? No) or just an anagram: UNITERS (yes!). Always check prefix AND non-prefix solutions.

Secondary Prefixes Worth Knowing

Beyond the Big Five, these prefixes produce fewer bingos but appear frequently enough to be worth recognising:

PRE- (80+ bingos)

PRELOAD, PRESOAK, PRETEND, PREVAIL. Look for PRE when you have P, R, E together.

DIS- (90+ bingos)

DISRATE, DISROBE, DISMAY. Powerful but requires D, I, S — common tiles.

IN- / IM- (70+ bingos)

INSTATE, INFLATED, IMPASTE. Two tiles for a prefix makes this very efficient.

EN- / EM- (60+ bingos)

ENTAILS, ENSLAVE, EMPOWER. Short prefix, common tiles, many valid words.

⚡ Speed of Recall

Knowing a word exists is only half the battle. You need instant recall under time pressure — which only comes from repeated, active study rather than passive reading.

Group by letter patterns: Organise study around patterns: words with double letters, words with PH, words ending in -TION. Pattern recognition fires faster than individual word recall.

Use spaced repetition: Review new words at increasing intervals: 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks. This locks words into long-term memory efficiently.

Focus on 2-3 letter extensions: Learning that RAIN becomes TRAINS, BRAINS,RAINED gives you multiple plays from one root word. Extensions multiply your vocabulary exponentially.

Applying These Words in Real Games

🎮 Game-Ready Knowledge

A word you can recall in 2 seconds under clock pressure is worth more than 100 words you vaguely remember. Speed of recall is everything.

🧩 Practice Routine

1

Spend one week focused on a specific length or pattern, then rotate to the next

2

If the answer is no, that word needs more active study time before moving on

3

Visualise the word on a real board with specific premium square positioning

4

What letters would it need to hook onto? Which existing words enable it?

Advanced Rack Management

🎲 Tile Turnover

Playing 5-6 tiles per turn cycles through the bag faster, giving you more chances to draw premium tiles. Single-tile plays starve your own access to good draws.

✓ Good Leave

One high-value tile (J/X/Z) + common letters

✗ Bad Leave

Q without U + multiple low-frequency consonants
