Strategy for High-Scoring 2-Letter Words
QI on Triple Letter Score: Place Q on a TLS and QI scores 31 points (10×3 + 1). This is often the best play for Q — no need to find a QU word when QI alone scores higher than most 5-letter words.
Parallel plays with XI/XU: Play XI or XU parallel to an existing word. Each letter that touches a tile above/below scores separately — a well-placed parallel can net 20+ points from a 2-letter play.
ZA for Z flexibility: ZA plays anywhere you have an open A. It's the fastest way to dump Z without needing a longer word. On a DLS, ZA scores 21 points from just two tiles.
Know your dictionary: If playing SOWPODS, KY and CH give you two extra 7+ point options. If playing TWL, focus on QI, ZA, XI, XU as your power plays. Knowing which dictionary you're using changes your 2-letter strategy completely.
🧠 Pro Tip
Memorizing all 107 two-letter words (TWL) is considered the single biggest improvement a player can make. It opens up parallel plays, hook extensions, and board positions that are invisible to players who only know common words.
