Learning 8-Letter Words by Stem

July 29, 2026 8 min read

Once you've mastered 7-letter bingos, the next frontier is 8-letter words. These play through an existing tile on the board, using all 7 of your tiles plus one already in position. The 50-point bonus still applies, and because you're building on existing infrastructure, these plays often land on premium squares. Here's how to extend your stem knowledge into 8-letter territory.

How 8-Letter Bingos Work

Unlike 7-letter bingos where all tiles come from your rack, 8-letter bingos incorporate one letter already on the board.

💡 The Through-Play Concept

Your 7 rack tiles + 1 board tile = 8-letter word. You still get the 50-point bingo bonus because you used all tiles from your rack. The board tile acts as a free 8th letter.

✓ Advantages of 8-Letter Bingos

More letters = more options. Often land on premium squares. Can score 80-120+ points with bonus placement.

⚡ Challenge

Must spot which board letter to play through. Requires scanning multiple positions simultaneously.

The Extension Patterns

Most 8-letter bingos follow predictable patterns. Learn these frameworks and you'll spot opportunities faster.

Other patterns

Suffix through-play: Rack has AEINST + board has G → SEATING through the G. Your stem knowledge directly applies — just add the board letter as the 8th.

Prefix through-play: Rack has EATINGS and board has R in position → RSEATING? No. But rack has EATINGR and board has S → SERATING? Think in chunks: RE+ASTING, UN+SEEING.

Internal through-play: The board letter sits in the middle of your word. Hardest to spot but often the highest-scoring because opponents don't see it coming.

Most Productive 8-Letter Stems

These 7-letter stems (from your rack) produce the most valid 8-letter words when combined with a board tile.

When to Look for 8-Letter Bingos

Don't search for 8-letter plays every turn. Focus your energy when these conditions are met:

✓ Open through-lanes exist

A row or column has 7+ empty squares with one existing tile you can play through.

✓ Your rack has bingo-friendly tiles

3 vowels + 4 common consonants, or a known stem on your rack needing just the right board letter.

✓ Common letters on the board

An E, S, R, or T on the board in a playable position gives you the most through-letter options.
