The Stem Method Explained
A 7-letter word is just a 6-letter stem plus one additional tile. The method works by:

Not all stems deserve equal study time. Prioritize by two factors: how many bingos the stem produces, and how likely you are to draw those tiles.

The Anagramming Skill
Knowing which letters work isn't enough — you need to anagram them into the actual word under time pressure. Here's how to build this skill.
Common endings first: Look for -ING, -TION, -ED, -ER, -EST patterns in your 7 tiles. These are the fastest routes to spotting a word.
Prefix stripping: Can you see RE-, UN-, DE-, or IN- at the start? Remove it mentally and see if the remaining letters form a word.
Consonant-vowel pattern: Most English words alternate consonants and vowels. Arrange your tiles in this pattern to trigger word recognition.

Common Mistakes When Learning by Stem
✗ Memorizing words without stems
Learning NASTIER in isolation means you can't connect it to SATINE+R, RETINA+S, or TISANE+R. Always link back to the stem.
✗ Skipping the anagram step
Knowing SATINE+D exists isn't enough. You need to instantly produce INSTEAD, DETAINS, SAINTED from those 7 tiles.
✓ Learn the alphagram
Sort stem letters alphabetically (AEINST for SATINE). This is how you'll see them on your rack — jumbled, not spelled out.
✓ Practice under time pressure
Tournament games have clocks. If you can't spot and anagram a stem in 30 seconds, it's not yet usable in competition.
