Letter Frequency in Scrabble — Tile Distribution Guide

8 min read Word Finder

Every Scrabble game starts with the same 100 tiles, but not all letters are created equal. Understanding how tiles are distributed — which letters appear frequently and which are rare — gives you a strategic edge in rack management, tile tracking, and predicting your opponent's plays. Here's the complete breakdown.

Complete Tile Distribution

The standard English Scrabble set contains 100 tiles distributed across 27 categories (26 letters plus blanks):

Frequency Tiers

Tiles fall into distinct frequency groups that determine their strategic value:

🟢 High Frequency (6-12 tiles)

E(12), A(9), I(9), O(8), N(6), R(6), T(6) — These form the backbone of most words. You'll draw them constantly.

🔵 Medium Frequency (3-4 tiles)

D(4), L(4), S(4), U(4), G(3) — Strategically important. S is the most valuable despite its low point value.

🟡 Low Frequency (2 tiles)

B(2), C(2), F(2), H(2), M(2), P(2), V(2), W(2), Y(2) — Mid-value tiles. Duplicates hurt rack flexibility.

🔴 Single Tiles (1 each)

J(1), K(1), Q(1), X(1), Z(1) — High-value but rare. Once played, they're gone forever.

Strategic Implications

Understanding frequency transforms how you make decisions throughout the game:

✓ Tile Tracking

Know what's been played to predict remaining tiles. If all 12 E's are gone, vowel-heavy words become impossible.

✓ Rack Balance

Aim for 4 consonants and 3 vowels. Frequency knowledge helps predict what you'll likely draw after exchanging.

✗ Hoarding Rare Tiles

Don't hold Q, X, or Z hoping for premium squares. Their rarity means opportunities are limited — play them when you can.

✗ Ignoring Vowel Count

42 of 98 letter tiles are vowels (43%). Ignoring this ratio leads to unplayable racks.

💡 Key Insight

The letters in ETAOINSR account for 68 of 98 letter tiles (69%). If you can't make a word from these letters, your rack is probably imbalanced.

Points vs Frequency Trade-off

Scrabble's design creates an inverse relationship between frequency and point value:

1 pt

E, A, I, O, N, R, T, L, S, U

2-4 pt

D, G, B, C, M, P, F, H, V, W, Y

5-10 pt

K, J, X, Q, Z

Strategy Tips

Track the S tiles: Only 4 exist. Each S is worth far more than 1 point because it enables plurals and bingos. Never use S unless it gains 8+ extra points.

Memorize the singles: J, K, Q, X, Z — once played, they're gone. This helps predict opponents' racks in the endgame.

Watch the blanks: 2 blanks exist. They're the most powerful tiles despite being worth 0 points. If both are played, no more wild cards remain.
