Word Frequency and Priority Lists
The SOWPODS dictionary contains over 280,000 words. You can't learn them all — and you don't need to. Frequency data reveals which words actually appear in games, letting you focus your study time on the vocabulary that will score real points. This guide explains how word frequency works and how to build a study order that maximises return on effort.
Why Frequency Matters
Not all valid words are equally useful. A word you'll encounter once in 1,000 games isn't worth the same study time as one you'll see every third game. Frequency-based study is the single most efficient path to improvement.

Roughly 80% of your scoring opportunities come from knowing just 20% of available words. The top 1,000 most playable words cover the vast majority of game situations you'll face.
How Word Frequency Is Calculated
Word frequency in Scrabble isn't about English usage — it's about tile mathematics. A word's playability depends on how likely its component tiles are to appear together on your rack.
Tile distribution probability: E appears 12 times in the bag, Z appears once. Words using common tiles (E, A, I, O, N, R, T, S) are playable far more often than those requiring rare tiles.
Combination mathematics: How many ways can you draw the letters for SATIRE? Far more than for JINXED. The more common the required tiles, the more often you'll hold the right combination.
Board availability: Some words need specific board openings (parallel plays, through-letters). Words that fit many board positions rank higher in practical frequency.
Simulation data: The most accurate frequency counts come from simulating millions of games and tracking which words actually get played. This captures both tile and board factors.
Priority Study Order
Learn words in this order for maximum game impact. Each tier builds on the previous one — don't skip ahead until the current tier is solid.
🧩 Study Progression
All two-letter words (107): Used in almost every turn for parallel plays. Non-negotiable foundation. Memorise all 107.
High-scoring short words (Q/Z/X/J): QI, ZA, XI, JO, AX, EX, OX — high points, common situations.
Top 100 three-letter words: The power words for parallel play and tight board positions.
SATIRE-based bingos: The most probable 7-letter words built from the top bingo stems (SATIRE, RETINA, SENORA, etc.).
Hook words: Single-letter extensions of common words. Know which words take an S, which take front hooks.
Probability-ordered longer words: 4-6 letter words ranked by how often their tiles co-occur. Hundreds of words most players don't know.
Using Frequency Lists Effectively
Having a list isn't enough. How you study it determines how quickly words become available to you during games.
✓ Effective Methods
Spaced repetition flashcards, anagram drills with target words, play games focusing only on applying new words, test with a partner
✗ Ineffective Methods
Reading word lists without testing, studying too many words at once (max 20/day), skipping review of previously learned words
Frequency by Word Length
Different word lengths serve different strategic purposes. Understand where each length category fits in competitive play.
